40,000 WORDS BY HEART. Some people are possessed of prodigious memories. A famous cardinal could write and converse fluently in seventy languages. The historian, Lord Macaulay, could recite complete books of poetry without hesitation. One of the most astounding memory feats of all time was performed by a young Corsican student at Padua University. A list of 40,000 words, strung together without any relation to each other, was recited to the student, who promptly repeated every one in exact order.
