CRICKET.

PLAINS ASSOCIATION. GAMES IN THE RAIN. On Saturday morning the weather was not promising for cricket, but despite uninviting conditions and the prospect 'of rain during the afternoon, six teams assembled on the Plains Association’s ground at Pipiroa. Everything was in readiness for a start on time, when the rain come over and seemed set for the remainder of the day. Having come a long way, however, some of the teams were reluctant to return home without playing the afternoon out, and despite the fact that rain was falling lightly but steadily, the Kaihere and Kopuarahi teams, wjth players arrayed in a multi-coloured assortment of coats and hats, and even goloshes, took the field to play their innings out. With one set of teams making a start, the others were obliged to follow suit despite reluctance on the part of many of the players. The wicket %vas pronounced as “a batsman’s,” as some of the following scores displayed, though in one case the bowlers had the game all their bwn way. On number one wicket Kaihere and Kopuarahi played their game right out. Batting first, Kaihere put on 69 for the ten wickets, and Kopuarahi following on put on 122 for nine, giving them a lead of 53. The outstanding feature of this game was McDonald's bowling. He took all the Kopuarahi wickets for 48 runs. The best scores were Lawcrence, 45. and McMillan, 31. On number two wicket, Kotepeehi playing against Maramarua, proved that the wicket was the barmen’s. Wright and Roberts carried the score to 38 before the first wicket fell. Roberts and Hoff then carried on to 80, when the latter was bowled, and Wentworth joining Roberts the total was taken to 117 for the loss of two wickets—Roberts (46) and Wentworth (27). The innings was declared and for Maramarua Symes and Harris took the score to seven without a loss when time would not permit further play. On the third wicket disaster attended Pipiroa from the first ball, which captured Akcrhurst’s wicket for a "duck.” Phillips followed on and Stretton, who was bowling dead on to the wicket and maintaining a splendid length, captured his wicket also in the same over. The score stood at two wickets for no runs. Foster (8) and J. Knox (1) carried the score to ten without a further wicket falling when the umpires decided against-the weather and the game was abandoned. Next Saturday Kaihere and Kopuarahi will be able to complete their game comfortably, while in the case of other matches it will be a race against time. Details of Saturday’s scores ere as follows:—
