DERATING.
ASSISTANCE TO FARMERS BY COALITION GOVERNMENT. Substantial relief will be granted to rural ratepayers as a result of the Government’s decision to make grants to county councils out of the Main Highways Revenue Fund as a subsidy on rates. The subsidy to be made will be at tfie rate of 2s fid in the pound on the average annual amount of rates collected by local bodies during the three years ended March 31, 1930, and means a total sum involved of £250,000. The group will be applied in making refunds to ratepayers at the rate of 12 J per cent, of the amount pavable in respect of rates levied for the financial year ended March 31, 1932. Grants also apply to road board districts entirely within the boundaries of a county. This is a .step towards the lifting of the burden from our producers that the Coalition Government intends as part of its policy towards restoring financial stability and confidence.
