ANCESTRY

SOME OF THE WORLD’S RECORD TENURES. A Swedish farmer whose family had farmed the same land since A.D. 1470 was mentioned recently in the Manchester Guardian. No instance has yet been brought forward of a British farmer with so long a tenure, but it is not so long since that record could easily have been matched in England. A correspondent sends particulars of one XVapshott who was ejected from a farm at Chertsey in the latter half of last century. He claimed lineal descent from Reginald Wapshott, a contemporary of King Alfred, by whom the land was granted to tho Wapshott family and farmed by them for a thousand years. The family of Dr Pusey, tho theologian, had a connection almost as long with Pusey village, Berkshire.
