a correspondent writes: Usually of the maize I sow 80 per cent, is for pheasants and other birds, and 20 per cent for cob. Now J sow 100 per cent for cob, and the idea is simple: put the grain in an old bucket or tub and damp all over with kerosene by stirring. Leave 20 minutes at least, then dust with red lead and sow. They won’t pull the young shoots up and eat the grain. This may act with other seed. Of course great care must be taken with the lead, which is poison.
