SOCIAL NOTES.

On Thursday afternoon of last week a very enjoyable farewell party for Mrs C. R. Bassett, was held by Mrs G. B. Dixon at her residence. Progressive bridge was played, the first prize being won by Mrs S. J. Hedge, and the consolation prize by Mrs D. G. McMillan. Mr and Mrs A. J. Young entertained a number of friends on Friday evening at a farewell party for Mr and Mrs Bassett. Bridge was played, the prizes being won by Miss Leila Thorp, first, and’ Miss Helen Mat!hews the consolation prize. During the evening Mr Young, on behalf of the guests, presented Mr and Mrs Bassett with gifts as tokens of remembrance from their friends, and wished them every success in the future. At the residence of Mr and Mrs G. P. Lamb on Saturday evening Mr and Mrs P. Williams and Mr and Mrs Lamb gave a farewell bridge party for Mr and Mrs C. R. Bassett. The winners for the highest aggregate of points were Mrs W. J. Towers and Mr C. W. Neaber, and Mr C. N. O’Neill the hidden number. During the evening Mr Lamb in a short speech said how sorry they all were that Mr and Mrs Bassett were going away, and Mr Williams made a presentation to Mr Bassett for his daughter, Cherry, of a case containing a silver fork, spoon and knife.

The' Pacroa Ladies' Bridge Club held their final gathering for the season on Tuesday evening in the Parish Hall. Prizes for the highest aggregate of points for the evening were won by Mrs W. Barclay and Mr P. Williams, and the hidden number prizes by Mrs W. W. Little and Mr C. W. Ncaber. The consolation prizes went to Mrs G. S. Talboys and Mr E. p. Preston. The prize for the highest aggregate of points for the year was won by Mrs P. Williams, and the prize for the runner-up was won by Mrs J. W. Silcock. During the evening, the president of the club (Mrs W. J. Towers) made a presentation to Mrs G. H. Taylor, who is leaving Pacroa at the end of the year. Among the ladies present were: Mrs E. E. Fxlwards, Mrs W. J. Towers, Mrs W. Taylor, Mrs V. J. Innes, Mrs F. C. Hubbard, Mrs W. Barclay, Mrs G. P. Lamb, Mrs P. Williams, Mrs W. Bain, Mrs M. E. Connolly, Mrs R. S. Carden, Mrs E. H. Andrews, Mrs H. Poland, Mrs G. S. Talboys, Mrs W. W. Little, Mrs E. S. Masters, Mrs G. H. Taylor, Miss Clymo, Miss Elliott, Miss Dawber, Miss Argali and Miss Menzies. Several ladies attended the local rifle range on Saturday last, on the occasion of the opening of the season of the Pacroa Defence Rifle Club. Among those present were: Mrs F. C. Hubbard (wife of the president), Mrs R I. Wells (deputy-president’s wife), Mrs L. Morris, Mrs R. I. Roberts, Mrs W. P. Wylde, Mrs W. Collett a’nd Miss G. Grant. A sumptuous and delectable afternoon ten was served between ranges in the club’s pavilion. A very pleasant time was spent at the Parish Hall, Pacroa, yesterday afternoon, when the members of St. Paul’s Ladies’ Guild held a gift and social afternoon in connection with the annual bazaar, which is to take place on Thursday next, November 26th. Musical items, were contributed by Mrs Harvey Evans, Mrs Dean, Mrs Scudamore, Mrs Samuel and Miss Paterson. Mrs Thorp also gave recitations and every number was enthusiastically received and enjoyed by the many who were present. A very nice afternoon tea was served by the Ladies’ Guild.
