"The figures and words in parenthesis denote amounts for work estimated for but still to be done. Other works estimated for are all completed, excepting grading, and the result from a financial point of view is exceedingly satisfactory when comparing estimates with expenditure. Expenditure—General Account.

“While I was oil* duty the question of repairs to Pipiroa Ferry was discussed by the Council. These were estimated to cost about £BO, I have since seen Mr Clare, and he is prepared to do this urgent work when required and will obtain finance from his bank on an undertaking from this Council to pay the amount due to him into the bank next April. “The question of a cold emulsion

sprayer was also discussed. The engineer explains that this would undoubtedly save in other directions, and in such case the purchase of this item of plant would be justified. “The item interest on overdraft, £27 5s 3d, will be partly, if not wholly, offset by interest chargeable for advances to loans. Receipts—General Account. “Gcneial receipts promise to equal estimates, except in the case of Komata ferry. Expenditure in Ridings. “The engineer has kept in close touch with me regarding finance during the past half year, with the result that the riding accounts are in a highly satisfactory condition. The position of Kerepeehi and Netherton is still somewhat obscure, owing to the sealing work being in progress, but taking the engineer’s estimate for the whole work as a basis, there appears to be an ample margin to complete. Inspector. “The Director General of Health has accepted the Council’s appointment of Mr McLeod as sanitary inspector, and the Council thus ceases paying £5O per annum as from September 30th. A resolution appointing Mr McLeod to this position will now be required. Public Works Subsidy Estimates. “The Public Works vote iccommended this year appears, except in the case of Mangatarata Roads, to be altogether the working of of dead horses.

General. “A ratepayer of Ngatea township, Mrs McDuff, approached me regarding the piping of the drain in front of her boardinghourse in the interest of public health. I have asked Mr McLeod to inspect and report on this matter. Mrs McDuff states that she cannot do the job horse]f at present, but that if the Council does the work she is prepared to repay in monthly instalments. This appears to me to be the liability of the settle’-, the Drainage Board, the Council, and the Highways Board, the latter for protection of scaling when laid, and the Drainage Board on account of saving of future maintenance. 'The settler’s share of the cost could be reclaimed by the Council. This particular job wuld cost less than £100."

INSPECTOR’S REPORT.

The Uauraki Plains County Council’s Inspector (Mr M. McLeod) reported on Thursday last as follows:—Traffic. “The roads of the County have been regularly patrolled, and the parking of cars at various functions has been supervised. One ease of speeding and one of an unlightcd cycle will be brought before the Court on the 24th instant. “Ten tests for drivers’ licensees have been made and the licenses approved. Traffic Signs. “I respectfully suggest that signs be erected on each side of the Komata Fi rry approaches. Buildings. "Two permits have been issued, one for alteration work at the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Co., Huirau Road, Turua, and the other for a new dwelling at Waitakaruru. Noxious Weeds. “The two notices served last month have been complied with and a further notice has been issued to another offender.”
