THE PAEROA CLUB. REVIEW OF SEASON. The committee of the Paeroa Bowling Club will present the following annual report for the consideration of members at the twenty-seventh annual meeting of the chib, to-morrow evening:— Official, Opening.—The season was opened on October 4th in good weather ami many clubs from throughout the goldfields were represented. Membership.—The membership of -the club has increased slightly during the year and now stands at 55, including country and honorary members. Finance.—As show. by the balance sheet'the financial position is sound ■and the year’s operations resulted with a small credit balance. Green.—From the opening .'ay until Christmas,, the green was in very good order, but then the Onehunga weed took charge and although several remedies were, tried, it was found to , be impossible to get a decent green. As members are aware, the green was -closed on April 11th and your committee intended to proceed with a | scheme of improvements. However, it was found that beneath the top soil there was a mat <-f old grass roots from 11 to 2 inches thick. This.could not be contended with, and the com.mittee formed the opinion that the whole., green should be recond’tioned. The Mayor, and .members of the Domain Hoard reached the same conclusion and the action was endorsed by a special general meeting of the club. The work is now being carried out and the sincere 1 thanks of the club are due to the Mayor and Domain Beard for their assistance. Inter-club Matches.—Nine matches • were played during the season against neighbouring clubs, the result being seven losses and two wins. Clothier Shield.—This was held at Te Aroha, and after two days of en- , joyable games the shield was won by a Te Aroha rink.

Goldfield Stars.—Messrs Bowmer, Gibb, Chamberlain, and Williams represented Paeroa and succeeded in winning from Hikutaia. Matamata also challenged, but was defeated. Thames was the next aspirant and won by a small'margin. Fraser Stars.—This was held at Hikutaia, Paeroa being represented 1- by Messrs Doolan and Mettam, who ig were defeated by a small margin. >f Goldfields Championship.—This was i- held at Waihi, the- Paeroa Club being w represented by its champion, Mr W. Chamberlain. The winner was Mr R. is Buchan, of the Te Aroha Club. Club Champions.—The club champions were as follows: A Grade, W. Chamberlain; B Grade, J. P. Carter; $ First Year, H. Pennell. Club Tournaments. —The winners of " i the club tournaments were as follows: Brenan Shield, Messrs S. Matkovich 1, ® W. Ellis 2, L. Doolan 3, and F. iMarsh (skip); Pairs: Messrs W. Forrest and W. Taylor (skip); Hale Cup: Mr W. Chamberlain. Dominion ' Tournament.—The club ’ was represented at the Dominion tournament by Mr W. Chamberlain and Mr T. L. Williams, who put up a very creditable performance. ‘ Holiday Tournaments. — Several holiday tournaments were held during the season and proved very en1 joyable. ’ Night Play.—The club has bad a good year with night play, and the ’ members who took part materially helped the financial position. Caretaker.—The club is now in the ' position of having no caretaker, Mr ' Lowden, having asked to be relieved. This your committee agreed to. Obituary.—Since the last annual meeting the club has lost two very ' prominent members, viz., Mr F. Hayward and Mr M'. Chamberlain. Both were very old members and will be sadly missed. Your club extends to their families and relations its deep- I est sympathy, and desires to place on ’ record, its appreciation of the valuable .1 s-.rvices rendered by these late brother i bowlers. ■ j Thanks.—The thanks of the club i are due to the secretary and members f of the committee; to members gener- ( ally who have assisted during- the (

year; to Mr Ellerington and to the president for donations of trophies; to the selection committee, Messrs Chamberlain, Williams, and Holes, who carried out their duties satisfactorily; to Mr W. J. Towers, who represented the club at the South Auckland Association meetings; to Mr Forrest, green superintendent, who put in a lot of time during a very trying year; to Messrs Doolan, Pye, and Morland for their- excellent work in looking after the night play; to Messrs Brocket and Shand for the use of their rooms for committee meetings; to the ladies who assisted so often when the club entertained visitors, and to the local Press for giving publicity to. the club’s activities. In conclusion, it is sincerely hoped that the forthcoming season, during which the play will be on a new green, will be the forerunner of many enjoyable years of play. The retiring committee trust -that all members will extend to the new committee the same whole-hearted support that has been accorded to the present officers.
