CATTLE IN ARGENTINA
• SUBSTANTIAL FIGURES. There are stated to be 177,939 head of pure-bred stud cattle in Argentina, while there are 32,024,316 head of grade cattle—the classification being as follows: — Shorthorns, 18,109,465; Herefcrds, 2,786,064; Aberdeen Angus, 1,256,189. The numbers of other breeds are relatively insignificant. The enormous quantities of chilled beef that-Argentina supplies to the world’s greatest meat market (Smithfield, London), and which is in great request there at prices much in advance of those obtainable for the beef of other countries, is, as the above figures prove, mostly of Shorthorn origin—that is, bred from pure Shorthorns or from Shorthorn crosses.
