PAEROA SHOW.

-:o:-— — HAURAKI A. & P. ASSOCIATION. ANNUAL MEETING. The thirty-third annual general meeting of the Hauraki Agricultural and Pastoral Association (Inc.) was held in Mr Bain’s rooms on Wednesday evening, Mr P. R, Hubbard presiding over Messrs C. W. Neaber, H. A. Mills, G. Buchanan, C. Bassett, G. Wilson-, B. E. Veale, W. Reid. M. Crimmins, H. H. Sutton, E. P. Fathers, H. J. Hare, D. G. McMillan, the Rev. J. Lowden, and the secretary (Mr E. Edwards). Apologies were received from Messrs J. A. Reid; W. F. Johnstone, E. Shaw and E. W. Porritt.

Annual Report. The annual report stated that the position of the Association was very satisfactory. It continued as follows: — “The balance sheet shows a less of £4 2s 2d for the year, but actually the Association’s position has been materially improved during the year. The bank overdraft at 31st March, 1930, stood at. £272 9s sd, and at the end of the past financial year i educed to £lO 7s Bd, with outstanding accounts totalling £45. This reduction was-assisted by the sale of some of the property, from which transaction the Association, netted £l7l 14s 7d. This amount has’ been lodged with the National Bank of New Zealand in reduction ,of overdraft. _ , ' “The year’s operations in reality showed a profit of £5l, but the auditorfound a mistake had' been made in last year’s figures by crediting a sum of £ss‘to sundry debtors, and also to unpaid members’ subscriptions. This duplication of entries made last year’s profit appear to be £B2 5s 9d, when it should have been only £27 5s i-d. To place the financial position accurately before the members, this amount had to be written off against this season’s operations, and this being done, the whole of the gross profits have been absorbed. / “The Show, which was held in December 4th last, ’was an undoubted success, and the number of entries were well up to the usual standard. The quality of stock showed was evidence of the improvement being made in the stock of the district.. r “The competition for the Captain Hubbard Memorial Cup was very keen and fine groups of high quality pedigree Jerseys were paraded before the judge. The ultimate winner was Mr W. H. Miers, of Rototuna, and Mr B. E. Veale’s Tirohia Group was awarded second position. ’ ‘The competition amongst the Jersey cattle was exceptionally good, and each class was a difficult one for the judge to arrange in order of merit. “Shorthorn cattle were, represented by some good animals, but the entries were not large.

1 “Amongst the pedigree divisions were some high quality animals, and although entries in this section were not up to the numbers of a few years ago, there was still keen competition in most cases. It is pleasing to record the re-entry of the pedigree Ayrshires in our catalogue. For several years we had no entries' from this breed, but last year some very fine Ayrshires were exhibited, there being competition in most classes. “Thte sheep classes again showed an increase in numbers) and give evidence of the increase of sheep breeding in the district. . “Milch stock and calf classes wei-e all well contested, especially the latter, whose entries were very large.

Horse Section. “Draughts.—This section was not strongly represented by numbers, but the animals shown were very good representatives of< this class. The same remarks niight be made about the thoroughbred section. “Light harness horses were very poorly represented, and entries in this section have been getting fewer, each year for some time. ‘Ponies, hacks and hunters were strongly represented, both numerically and by quality. Every class was good. The Dominion Hunters’ Competition, which is the biggest event in the Show ring, was won by Mr A. M. Saqmel’s El Arish, while Mr P. H. Clarkin secured second honours with his high class hunter, Polite. The champion hunter .award went to Mr Gordon Wyborn’s Moascar. “Sideshows and industrial exhibitors were well represented, and added materially to the success of the Show. Generally speaking, the Show was a great success and a good medium of advertisement for our district. “The committee desire to place on record its thanks and appreciation to the judges • and stewards for their help, especially to the chief stewards, Messrs D. G. McMillan, E. P. Fathers, D. Sheehan, A. J. Andrews and W. A. Reid. ’

Sale Yards.

“The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency is making full use of the accommodating yards by holding regular sales, which appear o be successful, and are a boon to the local farmers, and business people ;>f. the town. The rent received from the yards is of great assistance to the Association. “The negotiations (reported last year) of the sale of portion of the Association’s property were completed and, as mentioned under the financial heading provided £l7l odd towards the liquidation of the Association’s liabilities. « ■ • “Your-committee desire to place on record their thanks and appreciation to the business people of Paeroa for their voluntary donations and prizes donated. Also to the members for their combined support. Our thanks is also due to Mr W. Bain for the free use of his room for meetings, tc the proprietors of the “Hauraki Plains Gazette” for the free publicity given to all of our meetings and activities, and also to the Ohinemuri Jockey Club for liberal donations and use of hurdles and seats.” ;■

Finance. The statement of accounts f.,v the financial year ended March 31st, 1931, showed that the bank overdraft had been reduced to £lO 7s Bd, from £272 9s sd. - The receipts for the year were as follows: Members’ subscriptions, £194 4s; entry fees, £B9 12s 2d; donations, £43 16s; gate receipts, £57 8s; ground rents, £44 3s 6d; weight guessing, £6 12s 6d; advertising in catalogues, £5O lbs 6d; sale of catalogues, £2 19s; dividend Thames Valley Dairy Finance Company shares, £6; Rent, New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Co., Ltd., £75; Baby Show, £3 10s. - The balance sheet at 31st March, 1931, was as follows: — , Liabilities: Accumulated funds, 31st March, 1930, £713 14s 3d; deduct loss, £4 2s 2d—-£709 12s Id; sundry creditors, £45 Is 6d;: bank overdraft, £lO 7s 8d; total, £765 Is 3d. Assets: property, £597; less sold, £l7l 14s 7d—£425 5s sd; Hubbard Memorial Cup. £6O; shares Thames Valley Dairy Finance Co., £65; sundry debtors — Members’ subscriptions, £111; sundry, £lO3 15s 15s lOd; total, £765 Is 3d. Discussing the financial statement, the secretary stated that the item of £177 Is, bad debts, written off. included £55 members’ subscriptions written off last year, as explained in the annual report, and £122 members’ subscriptions written off this year. Many exhibitors from'outside the district became members but did not resign, and it was necessary to write off a big number of subscriptions each year..

After a few more explanations, Mr G. Buchanan moved the adoption of the report and balance sheet, and in doing so congratulated the Association on its sound financial position. He drew attention, to the fact that the Associaiion had two banking accounts, one . overdrawn to the extent of £3OO and guaranteed by a number of members, and the other showing a credit of £309 18s 4d..4 He therefore suggested that the credit be used to wipe out the overdraft arid the guarantee cancelled. As the Association would require an overdraft in the future, a •new set of guarantors could be secured.

The motion -was carried, and it was agreed to discuss the financial matters at a later stage in the meeting.

At this stage Mr Buch, anan brought up the matter of the bank overdraft, and moved that the Society relieve the old guarantors of their contingent liability and obtain authority for a new overdraft of, say, £l2O. The secretary expressed the opinion that this limit was rather low, in view of the probability that the Society would be faced with the expense of enlarging the saleyards when the pi-sent. lease expired, otherwise the Auctioneering Company might move elsewhere. The matter of Relieving the old guarantors was generally endorsed, and the executive was recommended to do this and to arrange for a new overdraft up to £l5O.

Date of Show. The date of the annual show was fixed as Thursday, December 3rd. Jersey Classes. The recommendations from the special meeting at which they had been brought up by Mr H. H. Sutton, and referred to the annual meeting, were adopted.
