GOLDEN DAWN MINES. The managing director report’s that work is proceeding satisfactorily with the alterations and improvements to the mill at Owharoa. All concrete foundations for the new tanks and tube mill fiave been completed and the filter-pi ess building nearly completed. There are the present time .14 men employed lj>y the company, including four dismantling at Muir’s Reefs and eight erecting at Owharca. Samples of the No. 1 reef, where the Cinnabar occurs, have been sent tol tfie Thames School of Mines 'for assay, and resulted as per attached copy of report from the director of the school. Further work, v. ill be necessary to determine whether 'the Cinnabar exists as a true vein or not. Meantime,’ it is interesting, ic note that the presence of the Cinnabar is hot affecting the go.d values i The detailed report of the Thames School of Mines referred tp ■ showed that a sample marked ‘footwall portion 9 inches” contained 4 ounces of gold per ton, 13 ozs of silver, and 0. 94 per cent, of mercury, equal to 211bs per ton.
. The second sample, marked ‘ banging wall portion 9 inches,” assayed one ounce 12 grains of gold, one ounce 10 dwts of silver, and 0.15 per cent, of mercury, equal to 3.36 lbs per ton. The third sample, marked “two feet' of reef,” Returned 1 oz 10 dwt 12 gr. of gold, 5 ozs 10 dwts of silver, and 10,,72 per cent, mercury, equal tc 240 lbs’per ton. •With gold at £4 per ounce silver at 6d per ounce, and mercury at 5s per ton, the total value per ton of No. 1 sample was £2l Us 6d, of No. 2 sample £4 19s 3d, and No. 3 sample £66 4s 6d.
