ISRAEL ZANGWILL'S PLAY. “ THE WAR GOD.” The Workers’ 'Educational Association met last night in the Public Library. The study of Zangwill’s play '(indicated above) was directed by Mr W. Barclay. Acts 4 and 5 were cast and read in an intelligible manner, the work being spread over as many readers as possible. The import of the dialogue lost nothing by reason of its being cast jn blank verse, from which no variation occurs in the whole of the play. That an intelligent understanding of the author’s aim was not lacking was revealed in the bright discussion that followed after the interval. Time alone prevented the full elucidation of the vast problem of national strife. However, some of the hopes for a better understanding between nations were clearly expressed and appreciated. Next week the work of the session will be summarised, and further arrangements for the reading of “Milestones” (Bennett) announced.
