PAEROA BOROUGH.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. VERY SHORT MEETING. i The Paeroa Borough Council held its monthly meeting on last Thursday evening, His Worship the Mayor | (Mr W. Marshall) presiding over Crs. F. E. Flatt, H. J. Hare, H. M. Shand, H. H. Bray, P. E. Brenan, E. Edwards and C. W. Neaber. The Town Clerk (Mr W. C. Alexander) was in attendance. Centre Line on Roads. A circular letter was received from the Main Highway Board, urging that white centre lines be made on main roads,* at corners, etc., in order to divide the traffic and minimise accidents. The Mayor said that there were very few places in the Borough where the lines were needed. Health Inspector’s Salary. Further to previous correspondence on the subject the Director, Division of Public Hygiene; Department of Public Health, Wellington, wrote in respect of the salaries of Health Inspectors, pointing out that if economies could be effected by a re-ar-rangement of inspectorial areas and effecting any reduction in general expenses the Department would be pleased to pass on to the local authorities concerned any economies which it was ■ able to effect in this way. The Mayor said that as the Inspector's salary had been subject to a 10 per cent, cut the Council had endeavoured to secure a portion uf this saving for the benefit of ratepayers. Cr. Flatt moved that the fdii.'ister of Health be written to requesting that the principle involved in the question- receive his earnest consideration. Seconded hy Cr. Bray, and carried. , Weighing Machine. The Postinaster-General (the Hon. J. B. Donald) wrote acknowledging receipt of the Council’s representations regarding the location of _ a weighing machine on the footpath outside the Post Office, stating that the position would be reviewed when the present contract expired in 1&34. if was pointed out that weighing machines were in common use in public places in all parts of G.e Dominion without public objection being raised. So long as no obstruction to the public was caused it was considered that the placing of machines outside Government buildings was not subversive of good government. Finance. The Finance Committee’s report, which was adopted, stated that the receipts for the month amounted to £1,096 Is 2d, and the expenditure was £l,Oll 2s 9d, including £225 2s Sd, interest on loans. After accounts had been * paid the credit balance would be £176 9s Id.
