THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —In your editorial of August 14th you make reference to the fact that “obscure legal phraseology, undetected in the rush of hasty legislation, frequently passes into the Statute Book.” This should dispose, once and for all, of the fond illusion cherished by many trusting souls, that the function of the Legislative Council, is to act as a revising chamber, a,nd as a check on hasty legislation. When legal flaws are pointed out, it is nearly always by the Courts. It is time that y . Anti/Labour parties had the ffankness to admit that the real purpose of the Council is to defeat the popular will, should a Labour majority be elected to the House of Representa- ~ . fives. I am prepared to debate this subject on the public platform. ROY V. SMITH. • Paeroa, August 15, 1931.
