HAURAKI PLAINS.
TAR-SEALING OF ROADS. HIGHWAYS BOARD APPROVAL. The Main Highways Board has given its tentative approval to the scheme promoted by the Hauraki Plains County Council for the sealing of 36 miles of road within that county, for which a subsidy of £2 for 1 is allowed. The Board has, however, asked to be supplied with estimates showing the cost of an 18-feet road as against a 15-feet road, and the Engineer (Mr. F. Basham) will at once supply the necessary data, so that it will then only be a matter of finalising finance before commencing operations. The proposals, as approved, include the sealing of the road from the Waikato County boundary to the Puke Bridge (a distance of 26J miles) from Dalgety’s Corner to the Hauraki Bridge (6i 'miles),, and; the unsealed portion of the Orongo-Nethertonßoad (3 miles). Owing to the 1 exceptionally. lieavy traffic over the main road at Waitakaruru, about 21 chains of,the road has been badly damaged and slipped into the drain. It is estimated at it will cost £l5 a chain to repair, and the Main Highways and the Hauraki Plains County. Council will be jointly faced with this expenditure.
