TOO MANY CARS.
“MOTORING OVERDONE.” s. 'STATE ACTION ADVOCATED. The joys of motoring received scant ' rccognition.at a meeting of the Marton Chamber of Commerce last week. In fact, the excessive use of cars was severely criticised. j “I think the time has arrived when the Government should step in and check the'liberty of the people who buy motor vehicles when they , cannot really afford them,” said. Mr. T. J. Hogan, M.p\for Rangatikei, and his remark was endorsed by those present. Mr. Hogan said that something would have to be done .early, in the coming session,to place a restriction on the importation of cars, and especially American cars. ■ “The trade balance must be put right,” he said, “and this cannot be done so long as foreign cars can be easily purchased.Motoring is being overdone. Too much is being spent on American benzine, and business men who sell groceries, clothing, meat and who provide shelter for these-people are suffering. They are being ■ kept waiting for their money.” . He thought- that the Government should adopt a scheme of making everybody who wants a car procure a permit. In that way they would \ have to prove that the vehicle was really necessary.
