OUTSTANDING LOCAL FUNCTION.

PATRONS FILL THEATRE.

Many institutions and social bodies vie with each other to hold the most successful social function during the year. So far this season it will be generally agreed that the honours rest with the local Railways staff. On Monday night the Gaiety Theatre, was filled to capacity with a merry throng long before the appointed 'hour. Small wonder, when one stops to consider the splendid organisation that was manifested. Nothing was left to chance, and the result was an outstanding success, combined with pleasurable contentment. The decorations were as delicately pretty as they were unique. The Railway Social Club’s colours —red, green,and white —were used to great effect, and yet these bright colours did not in the least detract from the verdure of the native ferns, which also played a prominent part in the decorative scheme. The decorations on the stage were unique, and incorporated in the scheme or art was a signalpost, brilliantly illuminated, as also were the pretty streamers'which supported the myriads of electric lights. At 8.15 the grand march was led off by His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall), and the floor was packed with dancers, between 300 and 35$ being present. The M’s.C., Messrs W. Pennell, E. Greenhalgh, F. Smardon, C. Wrack and W. Wilson, fulfilled their duties in a most capable manner. The music, provided by The Haurakis (five, instruments), was excellent, and brought forth many congratulatory remarks from the dancers. Not the least item of the evening, however, was the supper arrangements, and the splendid supper itself. This was entirely managed by the Railways staff, and the organisation was perfect. Al] those who attended the Railway Ball of 1927 will long remember the happy function.
