PAEROA HIGH SCHOOL.

MEETING OF COMMITITEE. ROUTINE BUSINESS. The monthly meeting of the, Paeroa District High School Committee wn.s held on Saturday night, the chairman (Mr C. H. Pascoe) presiding over the following: Messrs W. Smith, W. H. Blakeway, J. W. Silcock, W, Purdie, C, T. Mcttam,. J. M. McDonald, R. J, Thorp, and W. L. Lawre.nce (secretary). REPAIRS TO GROUNDS. In reply to the committees (further inquiry the Education Board wrote advising that its architect had been instructed to take action regarding tiic tarring and sanding of the playgrounds. USE OF COUNCIL CHAMBERS. The twon clerk wrote aidvising that the Borough Council had declined the use of the new chambers in which to hold committee meetings, as it intended to reserve the room for the exclusive use of the council. SUBSIDY APPROVED The Education Board wrote advising its approval of the granting of a £ for £ subsidy on the amount raised by the Paeroa Orphans’ Club for school improvements, and stated that the sum df £27 13s 8d had been placed to the. credit of the school fund account. SCHOOL HOLIDAYS. The Education Board forwarded a circular showing that the, primary' schools under its jurisdiction had at present a. total of t.eni weeks’ holiday a year, and secondary schools a total of 13 weeks’ and 1 day a year. The board pointed' out tha,t it had recently had the. question df holidays under consideration, ami it had been resolved that, a referendum of school committees would be takem on the subject.

The committee discussed the matter at length, and an expression of opinion was put forward on behalf of the headmaster by the secretary. Finally it was resolved that it be a recommendation that two weeks holiday be granted in May of e.ach year instead of one, as at present, subject, to the approval of the headmaster.

VISITING COMMITTEE.

The visiting committee, Messrs Blakeway and Smith, reported that everything appeared to be satisfactory. The ta.rring and sanding of the playgrounds required immediate attention, but in view of the reply from the board it was agreed that nothing could be done at present. The alterations to the infants’ room had been practically completed, and a big improvement has been effected. The school buildings were in good repair, and the gronds were tidy and well kept.

Messrs Motta,m and McDonald were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. SHOW EXCURSION.

Mr Smith, who accompanied the children on the Waikato Winter Show excursion to Hamilton on Jujhe 4, reported tlyit the day had passed off successfully and the children had spent an enjoyable and instructive day. He. paid tribute to the. teachers who had accompanied the children, and referred especially to the work and organisation for the care and welfare of the children by Mr E. G. Preston.

It w.as resolved to write to Mr Preston expressing appreciation and thanks . NEW PLAYING AREA. The secretary reported oil the work on the new playing area, including the; fencing df the section. The action of the chairman and secretary in having the work completed on the lines indicated was approved. FINANCE. Accounts amounting to £2B 5s Id on the school fund account were passed for payment. A statqindnt was tabled showing that, the sum of £l2 10s 8d had been expended out of the Orphans’ Club dona.tioh and subsidy, leaving a balance of £l5 2s. In the new playing area account £l5 9s 6d had been expended, leaving a credit balance of £7l. SCHOOL STATIONERY. The question of school .stationery was discussed at length. Several members voiced the opinion that exercise books and pads were mot being used economically, and it was suggested that a considerable saving to parents could be eiffected on such items. It was decided to hold over further discussion until the next meeting, when the headmaster would be asked to give his views on the matter. USE OF SCHOOLGROUNDS. The local troop of girl guides was granted permission to use the schoolgrounds for the purpose of playing a basketball match.
