NGATEA SCHOOL.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The Ngatea District High School Committee held its monthly meeting on Monday evening last, Mr W. McDuff presiding over Messrs W. J. Clare, Barrible, W. Lawrence, and C. S. Foster (secretary). ; DDITIONS. In reply to the urgent i equests, of the committee the Education Board wrote advising that it had written to the Education Department requesting an early reply to the application made 'for a, grant for the; erection of an additional classroom. The application had been included in the list of “most urgent works,” and it was therefore hoped that a grant Would be forthcoming at an early da,te. The chairman stated that he; had learned that the board had the plans of the additions ready. STAFFING. The Education Board wrote advising that in response to the committeei’s representations a probationary assistant had been appointed. IMPROVEMENTS. The Education Boa.rd advised that a supply of grass seed had been forwarded on the understanding that it would be sown in accordance; with the directions of the agricultural instructor, Mr L. W. McCaskill. A grant of £3 had been made 'for repairs to the boys’ outbuilding. The chairman reported that the grass seed had arrived and had been sown. The; repairs to the outbuilding had not yet been done. The need for a curtain to partition off the two classes in one room was mentioned by the chairman, and it was decided to apply to the Education Board for a curtain. SCHOOL CONCERTS. Mr Clare, voiced the opinion that the teacher who had organised the children’s dance recently to ra ; ise funds for the provision of sports iequisites should be congratulated, and offered encoureagcment. The secretary was instructed to write accordingly. SCHOOL HOLIDAYS. A circular letter was received from the Education Board asking for an expression df opinion on the following questions:— That the; present number of holidays be increased. That the present number of holidays remain. That the former system of one week’s holiday at Eastejr, one at, midwinter, and one a ; t Michaelmas be reverted to. At present primary schools observed 10 weeks’ holiday and secondary schools 13 weeks’ ando ne; day during the year. At Christmas, May, aiid iAugust secondary schools observed one week more holiday than did primary schools. Members commented that the;re appeared to be sufficient holidays at present, and that the present, system was satisfactory. DENTAL CLINIC. The Education Board 'forwarded a report by its foreman on his inspection of the building provided for use as a dental clinic. The. report stated tha ; t no drainage was provided : the waste pipe from the sink discharged over the ground close to the building. No facings had been fixed to the inside door frames, and the finish was rough. (One; of the partitions had been lined on one side only. With these few exceptions the work had been done satisfactorily.
