THE Hauraki Plains Gazette. With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. MONDAY, JUNE 14, 1926. PREPARING FOR RESTORATION.

Whatever may be the result of restoration in Ohinemuri, the fact remains that 'from an external point of view a new life has set in for Paeroa. Whether this new and animated life will be for better or for worse remains to be seen. There is one thing, however: the newly elected Licensing Bench—live men, good and true—will act impartially, disinterestedly, amd with fairness to all the applicants for licenses within its. jm isdictiou. All that remains now is to wait until, the Bench sits on the 18th of the present month, when all doubts as to whom and where the licenses are to be dea.lt out will be finally determined. In the meantime very elaborate and extensive alterations and additions are being effected to .the hotels in Paeroa which upwards of seventeen years ago carried licenses to retail spirituous liquors. Quite a large number of tradesmen of various callings are employed on the three houses which it is expected will be allowed to throw open their doors on the first day of July next for the sale of liquor. These buildings for the most part, since no-license was carried, have been allowed to fall back with regard to repairs. Now that they are destined to follow a new i’,nd different course, quite a transformation scene has set in. The alterations being effected will render them not only miles ahea.d of what they were when first erected, but will allow them to be compared favourably with most hotels in the Dominion from every point of view. No expense is being spared, and nothing is left wanting .that is c.alcu*lated to add to the comfort a,nd convenience of the local and travelling public. Like a ship, all these hotels will have to be manned, which means that a deal of labour will have to be employed. This will all be good fol' trade, and no matter what amount is expended in the hotels, a, great deal of it will pass into other hands in the town. From an advertising point of view Paeroa has had, since restoration of licenses, a wonderfully cheap advertisement, which probably has done it greater service than can be seen on the surface. Another aspect of tlie question is that ample accommodation will be provided for travellers and those who have been seeking accommodation since the closing of the Paeroa Hotel pending alterations. Responsible and experienced people will be placed in charge of the new houses, so it is only reasonable to assume that they will be well conducted, and under such circumstances they should prove a distinct source of convenience whatever may be said to the contrary.
