Building permits to the vajue of £1.242 were passed at last night s meeting of the Borough Council.

The appointment of a pakeha bishop to the newly made Maori diocese has occasioned surprise among Wanganui Maoris. It is felt that, so far .'from developing the cause of the Maori mission, the suggestion that, after a lengthy period of missionary endeavour among Maoris, no Maori is yet fitted for the high office of bishop will constitute a hindrance to further endeavour.

It has been decided to make a presentation to Mr Claxton, Late chairman of the Thames Valley Power Board, and a subscription list was presented at the Paeroa Borough Council meeting last evening. At the Ha.uraki Plains County Council meeting yesterday applications were received from three legal Arms for the post of county solicitor. The Finance Committee reported at last night’s meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council that the revenue received by the borough for the last month was £378 4s 7d, and the expenditure amounted to £309 16s 4d. The credit balance, plus the advances made to the various loan accounts, was £2166 Ils lOd. The expenditure during the month in the various loans was £464 7s Id.

Mr F. W. Epps, of Mangatarata, and one time of Paeroa, who was seriously injured in a motor accident near Pipiroa at the beginning of December last has sufficiently recovered to walk without assistance.

The judging ot the district courts at the Auckland .Winter Exhibition was concluded early yesterday afternoon, Franklin winning the competition with 392 points out of a possible 550. Thames-Hauraki was placed second with 365 points, a,nd Te Kuit'i third with 233.

The position of the various loan accounts in the Paeroa Borough are as 'follows: Council Chambers loan account £633 17s lOd, domain improvements loarii Recount £lB 10s lid, water improvements loan account £1 9s 3d, all credit balances ; house sewerage connections lo'a,ii account £133 18s 4d, street improvements loan account £lO5l 9s lid, sewerage loan account £4 9s 7d, all debit balances.

Tire matter of carting across the footpath in wet weather was brought forward last night, when Cr. Silcock asked why the filling up of the duck pond in the domain had been stopped. The Mayor, in explaining the matter, said that tlie work iiad not been stopped. Cr. de Castro had drawn fiis attention to the bad state of the footpath, and lie had given instructions that no carting was to be done over the paths in wet weather. Tlie footpaths must be kept open for pedestrians.
