PAEROA BOROUGH.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. ROUTINE BUSINESS. The monthly meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council was held iff the Council Chambers lost night, there being present the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall), Crs. E. Edwards, F. E. Flatt, P. E. Brenan, J. W. Silcock, G. P, de Castro, H. J. Hare, E. A. Porritt, and the town clerk (Mr W. C. Alexander). OVERHANGING HEDGE. J. Bertelsen wrote drawing the council’s attention to a.n overhanging hedge at the corner of Belmont andStation reads. His Worship stated that, notice had been given to the owners io remove the nuisance within seven days. METALLING Or STREET. Mr J. P. Findlay wrote requesting the council to push on with the metalling of Victoria Street for which he had already contributed £5. The Mayor said that it. had been impossible to do the work so far, and he moved that Mr Findlay be informed that the works committee had the matter in hand and would do the work when possible.—Carried. REPAIR WORK. Mr C. S. McNamara wrote requestrug that a hollow place in the road opposite his gate be filled in.—-Refer-red to the works committee, with power to act. Mr W. H. Blakeway wrote pointing out the, ba,d state of the footpath in Wood Street, and also the gully portion of Russell Street. The Mayor said that, the street had been inspected that day. He pointed out that portion of the work could be undertaken. The, first step, he thought, would lie to make the property-owners divert the water, which was now running from their land on to the path and then into the drain. Cr. Flatt asked if temporary relief could be given without wasting money. Cr. de Castro thought tha.t some temporary relief should be gra.nted. It was decided to reply that the matter would, have careful consideration, and the works committee was authorised to do such portion as it considered advisable.

HEAVY TRAFFIC FEES. A letter was received from the Matamata County Council, asking the co-operation of the borough in haying the heavy traffic license fees adjusted. It was proposed to employ counsel and coiltest the allocation against the Hamilton Borough Council. Cr. Brenan thought that no good purpose could be gained by joining in the matter, and he moved that the Matamata County Council be inofrmed that this borough would not enter into any legal argument as to the allocation of the license 'fees up to March 31 last. LIBRARY ASSOCIATION.

A letter was received from the Libraries’ Association covering a copy of its rules and benefits in the way of discounts that could be gained by joining. The next conference was to he held in Wanganui in February, 1927.

It was decided that the matter be referred to he library committee, and tli at a full report on the library be presented at the next council meeting-

THE UNEMPLOYED. The Mayor said he thought that the council should do what it could to assist in the matter of the unemployed. The council was only a little local body with limited means, but it might be possible to put on two or three local married men extra. He thought that it should be ordinarypaid work. The council might carry out some of the loan work by organising a.nd employing some of the men. He had had as many as live applicactions in one day, and it Was a pitiable condition of affairs. Cr. Flatt said he saw that the Prime Minister was granting money for some relief works in Auckland, and he thought that the council should apply for money and go on wi fi the reading loans. It was resolved that the works committee be empowered to put on two or three men, a r s work could be found and finance arranged, preference to be given to married men.

RAILWAY SETTLEMENT. Tlie Mayor sajd that the Railway Department had approached the council with reference to roading and sewerage works a.t the railway settlement. On Or. Edwards’ motion it was decided to inform the Prime Minister that tire council would form a,nd roll the roads in the settlement provided the department supplied the metal.
