THE HUNTLY PRESS. Friday, August 5. 1932 OTTAWA CONFERENCE.

FROM the cable news it appears that the above is making satisfactory propress. Rapid decisions cannot be expected where so many nations are discussing their economic relations and where so many conflicting interests have to be adjusted. It may be accepted as axiomatic that at Ottawa no country will get all that it hoped for, each will most probably have to give more or receive less than it anticipated. That possibility was obvious from the first. Britain has some very valuable customers outside the Empire whose trade is as valuable to her as that of any of her Dominions; and she naturally desires to keep them. Brought down to bedrock, the object of the conference is to adjust the relations between the farmer and the manufacturer; at present the former is receiving so little for his products that he cannot buy the goods produced by the latter. The rectification of this position is a difficult and world-wide problem. Much help might be given by settling the monetary system of the Empire on an Imperial basis; so that the inter Imperial exchange of goods and service should be as free and as undisturbed as possible. This important object is evidently receiving a lot of attention at Ottawa; and it is to be hoped that something useful will result.
