Sutherland, who was recently elected to represent the combined districts of Waikato, Waipa and Raglan on the Auckland Harbour Board, attended his first meeting of the board this week. He was formally welcomed by the chairman, Mr G. R. Hutchinson.

The death occurred suddenly yesterday at her late residence, Hakanoa Street, of Mrs Alfred Powell, at the age of 36 years. The funeral will leave her late residence to-morrow (Saturday) at 2 p.m. for the Kimihia cemetery. The contractors are making good progress with the Mangawara bridge. The diversion on to a temporary part at the south end will probably soon be necessary. The north abutment has been built, and the driving of the piles is proceeding rapidly. Some anxiety is being aroused by a leak in the headrace at Arapuni, although the engineers say it is of little importance. Arapuni is like a sick man whose friends get in a flutter whenever the least thing goes wrong with him.
