SOCCER FOOTBALL

The result of the rep. match at Auckland was a surprise to local supporters who expected South Auckland to be soundly beaten. With a little slice of luck South Auckland should have won, and it was only in the last few minutes that Auckland scored their third goal to make it a draw. South Auckland players, however do not favourably comment on the refereeing o£ the game and in this connection some of the decisions were very hard to follow. One glaring instance when South Auckland were penalised, was when Humphries for Auckland in taking the kick booted the ball high over the goal posts to the delight of the crowd, who appreciated the sporting action. However one must net be too severe in the criticism, for a referre’s job is a thankless one and he receives more “kicks than kudos” as a rule. However, the chief thing to be pleased over is that Waikato held their own when expected to go down. All interest at present centres on the Howden Cup final next Saturday at Hamilton. Juniors. Starr Town beat Wanderers at Hamilton by 3to nil. A. and S. Lancaster with Bassick were the go-getters under referee Ted Hilman. A. Lancaster received a nasty knock shortly aftsr the start and took the goalie’s position but had to retire at the interval, the visitors thus being a man short for the rest of the game. Fairhurst, Roberts and Lancaster brothers were conspicuous for ’he winners.
