HUNTLY BOROUGH COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING 1 The ordinary meeting of the Huntly Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening, there being present, the mayor, Mr. W. C. E. George, and ~ Councillors T. Hall, L. Kosoof, J. C. Harrison, T. Chisholm, W. Parkea, H. J. R. Sheeran, and C. Hay-Chapman, town clerk. Town Planning Expert. A letter was received from Mr. E. V. Blake, notifying his intention to attend the council meeting. Waikato County Council. The above forwarded a copy of the minutes of Group Control committee meeting. It was resolved that the report be received and the council request that they be given direct representation or alternately joint representation together with the smaller local bodies. Applicaitm to Sub-Divide Property. Mr. K. S. Caldwell made application on behalf of Mrs. Sibthorpe for permission to sub-divide her property, pointing out to the council that although the sections would not be of the required size, the council might * see its way to stretch a point and agree to the sub-division being made. The application was declined as it is contrary to the borough by-laws. Lease of Town Hall. Mr. N. Blennerhasset, Tauranga, wrote to the council wherein he offered to lease the Town Hall as a picture theatre for a term of ten years. The letter was received and the offer declined. Deputation. At this juncture a deputation from the Huntly Bowling Club, consisting of Messrs. Watson, Barclay and E. Smith, waited on the council in connection with the proposed new site for a bowling green in the Domain Grounds. Mr. Watscn stated that he club was agreeable to leasing the site providing satisfactory terms could be arranged and they would like the council’s advice on the matter. Mr. Barclay said tl\at considerable expense would be involved in the laying down of the greens and the club was prepared to undertake this if the council would have the levelling done. This work could be carried out under the No. 5 Unemployment Scheme. The deputation stated that it was the club’s intention to erect substantial buildings on the grounds, including social rooms for the members, and in view of this they would like to be , informed as to some definite term of lease. The Mayor stated that the council viewed the deputation’s request sympathetically and it would arrange for the levelling of the allotted area for the greens, after which the club could carry out its programme of laying out and completing same. As to the leasing of the property, the usual term set out was for five years, but the council would take steps to see if they could get it leased for twenty-one years. The deputation was assured that the council would do all in its power to assist the club in every way. Quarry. A letter was received from Mrs. E. S. Bailey, Huntly South, in which she declined to agree to the terms of rental of the quarry, stating that she required £l2 per year, in addition to royalties. She also advised the council that the quarry was being worked in a dangerous manner. It was moved that the contractor be dismissed from any employment ©f the council until the quarry is put in order; also that he is to stay off the job when the quarry is in operation, and that £l2 per annum be paid as rental for this year. Sub-Divisional Plans. Mr. K. S. Caldwell forwarded subdivisional plans of property owned by F. Healey and the Taupiri Coal Mines Ltd. in Glasgow Street. These were passed and approved by the council. Dwelling in Disrepair. The Health Inspector reported on the state of a dwelling in Huntly < South which was in a very bad state ; and suggested that the Council com- < pel the owner to carry out certain repairs. The letter was received and I the clerk was instructed to write to ’ the owner in accordance with the Health Inspector’s suggestion. Building Permit. Application for a permit to erect dwellings in Hakanoa Street was made by M. Abbott. This was granted sub- i ject to the clerk’s approval. Carriers’ Licenses. It was decided that enquiries be made with reference to carriers’ licenses in the borough district of Huntly. Extra Usher for Town Hall. \ It was reported that at the Saturday night performance the number of i ushers was inadequate to cope with 1 the attention required and advocated the assistance of an extra usher. It j was moved that the matter be re- j ferred to the theatre manager. Works Committee. * The Mayor tendered his resignation j from the Works Committee on the ( grounds that there was too much demand on his time. Mr. J. C. Harri- y son was appointed to fill the vacancy.

. Noxious Weeds. ( The clerk was instructed to communicate with the Taupiri Coal Mines Ltd. requesting them to remove the noxious weeds growing on the road in Bailey Street. Sanitary Matters. Messrs. A. Dobson and Son. plumbers, were given a trial order to supply 25 sanitary pans and Mr. T. Heffron to be asked to give a quote for a similar type. Appreciation. The Mayor expressed on behalf of the council its thanks and appreciation to Mr. C. Hay-Chapman, town clerk, for his promptness in producing balance sheets of the Town Board and the Borough; also congratulating him on the fact that they had been returned from the Audit Department without being tagged. Traffic Inspector. It was decided to write Mr Maguire, traffic inspector, to attend the next meeting of the council. Night Watchman. The question of appointing a night watchman during the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., to be employed by the business firms of the town, was discussed at some length. It was reported that petty thieving was going on throughout the business area of the town and it was considered advisable to employ the services of a nightwatchman. Removing Spoil from Road. It was decided that the clerk write to all owners of property on the main road, Huntly North, requesting them to refrain from removing spoil from the side of the road, otherwise proceedings will be taken against them. Survey of Section. The clerk was instructed to inspect the section adjoining T. Furniss’ garage to see if the survey pegs were in the correct position. Jackson’s Road. The engineer submitted a report on the filling in of Jackson’s Road, the estimated cost being £SO.
