OBITUARY

TE MARAE MAHUTA. Another of Huntly’s old identities in the person of Te Marae Mahuta, passed away at Waahi Pa, on Sunday last at the age of 65 years. The widow of the late “King” Mahuta and mother of the present ‘King’ Te Rata, Te Marae was well-known and highly respected by both natives and pakthas alike, and although she never took a prominent part in public affairs, those who were fortunate enough to be admitted to her friendship knew her as the possessor of a charming and courteous personality. Recently, at the opening of the Maori meeting house at Ngaruawahia Mr. and Mrs. Coates, who were guests of honour, were welcomed by the deceased lady. Te Marae leaves four sons. Rata (the present King), Tumate, Tonga, and Rau Mahuta, but there are no daughters. The mourning in -the Lower Waikato is general, and it is many a year since such manifest expressions of sympathy have been expressed. Pakeha and Maori alike share in the sadness of the passing of a good and noble woman, a credit to her race and a striking object lesson for her successors.
