TRAIN SERVICE
HUNTLY TO GLEN AFTON. In view of the agitation in the past for a more efficient train service on the Huntly-Glen Afton line, the following letters which appeared recently in the daily Press may be of interest to local readers. HUNTLY TO GLEN AFTON. Sir, —I would like to draw the attention of the Railway Department to the running of the mid-day train from Huntly to Glen Afton. This train is timed to leave Huntly at 12.5 p.m. to reach Glen Afton about 1 p.m. Instead, it leaves Huntly about 12.45 p.m. and arrives at Glen Afton about 1.55 p.m. This has been going on for some time, and travellers do not get time to cover their ground, for they have to get the 4.25 train from Glen Afton to Huntly back. When one has to go to Pukemiro township and call on the business people it leaves no margin. M.K. HUNTLY-GLEN AFTON TRAINS. Sir, —The letter from “M.K.” re the above is far too moderate. The running of these trains is a positive disgrace, the only trains which run anywhere near the advertised time being the miners’ trains, morning and even ing. During the past two months the mid-day train from Huntly has rarely run to time, and has never returned on time. Instead ot' arriving at Huntly at 2.2 p.m., it is generally half an hour late, and as the last passenger train leaves again at 3 p.m. the time in Huntly is all too short. For one of the best (if not the best) paying lines in New Zealand, the service given by the department is a scandal. During the Raglan by-election, the present Minister of Mines criticised the Railway Department over the running of mixed trains for the miners; being apparently concerned regarding the danger the miners ran on these grades. Surely the miners should be his chief Concern now, so why doesn’t he rectify matters? SLOW MOTION.
