HUNTLY v. NGARUAWAHIA.
SENIOR FINAL. The senior final was played on Saturday last, the weather being fine overhead, with a cold wind blowing across the field. Opinion was divided as to how the match would go, but in Huntly the local team’s chances were favoured. These hopes were doomed to be dashed to the ground, however, for Ngaruawahia, playing a great game was too good for the locals and won by ten points to five. For some reason or other, Huntly seems to have lost its dash, the forwards appearing on the whole to be very sluggish, and the backs unable to throw the ball about with any certainty. Kicking was erratic and occasionally a little selfishness appeared. On the other hand, the Ngarua-. wahia forwards were full of go, and the backs, when the ball came their way threw it about great precision. Huntly scored first from a rush initiated by Maiki, the try being obtained right behind the goal, and Mahuta adding the major points. Maiki played a great game right through and was several times instrumental in stopping dangerous rushes. The first score obtained by Ngaruawahia was through weak play on the part of Huntly’s full-back, the try being converted by a very fine kick. Three more points were very easily obtained a few minutes later, and Morris soon capped a very fine game by potting a goal. The final scores were : Ngaruawahia 10 Huntly 5 The game was hard, but contested in the very best of spirit, and without doubt, the better side won. The game was controlled by Mr R. T. Hill, who gave every satisfaction.
