THE HUNTLY PRESS. PUBLISHED WEEKLY AT 2 P.M. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1916. The War.
THE news from the various Fronts, for the past week, while not telling of any notable advances on our side, are yet satisfactory in that they show that the enemy are quite unable to push back our lines, no matter what efforts they put forth. The most satisfactory news, perhaps, is that the Roumanians have at last got the measure of there, opponents, and are not only able to hold their ground but also to advance a little. The moral effect of this change in the fortune of war in that area, will be very gread, for both sides made a great point of the entry of Roumania into the War, and the Germans had concentrated all their spare energies there, hoping that by defeating Roumania thev woull strengthen thoir hands with the few remaining neutral nations, and at.the same time, increase the confidence reposed in them by Bulgaria and Turkey. This scheme seems in a fair way of being knocked on the head, and if the Roumanians can only keep up a strong offensive during the Winter, the Spring campaign ought to open very brightly. The Italians are steadily fighting their way towards Trieste. ‘ Progress in this area seems to he slower than anywhere else, but we have to remember that the Italians are fighting in most difficult country, and under very hard conditions. The Russians are doing a lot of fighting, but it seenis to be of a give and take character, and little or no progress is being made./ In France, the British and French, are continuing their pushing operations, and each week sees a little added to our gains. These gains are, perhaps, small" but the moral effect ot them is good, in that, they keep up the hearts of our men and correspondingly dishearten our opponents. All this is, as far it goes, satisfactory, but the end of the War seems to be a long way off yet, and it would be a pretty daring man who would venture to prophesy (he end.
