Police Court.

At the Police Court last week, before Messrs E. J. Farrell and W. Leather, Justices of the Peace, several residents were charged with breeches of the by-laws. Eight were charged with riding bicycles on the footpath in Hakanoa Street. All pleaded guilty, but pleaded extenuating circumstances, alleging that the road was too bad to ride on, and that they therefore thought they were justified in on riding on the footpath. The bench explained to the delinquents that the footpath was for pedestrians only, and that on no account must they be used for other traffic. If the roads were too bad to ride on, then the only co&rse for bicyclists was for them to become pedestrians for the time being. Each defendant was fined 5/ and costs 7/6. In the horse straying cases, the two defendants were find the same amount, viz., 5/ and costs 7/6.
