Police Court.

At the Police court on Friday last before Mr E. Rawson S.M. Tau Kami a native of Mangapeelii was charged with having five quart bottles of beer in his possession for consumption off licensed premises. In evidence it was shown that accused had been arrested for drunkenness on the 30th June and that when searched the five bottles were found in his possession. He had been brought up before two Justices and fined 5s on the charge of drunkenness. Constable Ingrain deposed that when arrested, Tau Kami was wearing a military uniform and that he had been masquerading during the recent Maori meeting as a returned Anzao hero. When asked for his pass he had been unable to produce it, and on applying to Major Northcroft at Hamilton it was found that the accused was a fraud. He was therefore stripped of his uniform and turned out in an old suit of civilian clothes. Accused was convicted and fined £3 and costs.

On Wednesday last, before Messrs W. R. Leather and R. McE.van Justices of the Peace, Thomae McGarry and William Peter Harvey were charged with assaulting Hurcules Sandford Burleigh at Ohinewai on Tuesday. It appeared from the evidence adduced, that Burleigh was manager of the Firth Pumice Mill at Ohinewai, while McGarry and Harvey were employees. On Tuesday the two latter had been drinking and in consequence were dismissed. They resented this, and challenged the Manager to come out on the road and fight. The challenge not being accepted, they followed the manager into the works and there “ took to him.” In the scuffle that followed, Burleigh was soon brought to the ground and some ca rpenters had to interfere. They secured the worse of the two accused and locked him up until the arrival of the police. The other got away, but was secured on Wednesday morning in time to be brought up. The manager received no serious damage. The two accused were convicted and fined £5 each and costs £l-6-0 or in default one mouth’s imprisonment in Mt. Eden Gaol.
