Sick and Wounded Soldiers’ Benefit.

MINERS’ HALL, TUESDAY, OCTOBER STH.

A grand combined benefit will be given at the Miners’ Hall, on Tuesday, October sth, in aid of the Sick; and Wounded Soldiers’ Fund by a local juvenile enterprise under the direction of Mr J. Carrnody entitled “ The Pickaninny Coons.” Mr Carmody will be assisted by Mr G. Calder of the Lyceum Pictures gratuitously for the first half of the entertainment. The second half will consist of a unique series of original vaudeville sketches given by the Pickaninny Coons, who are a troupe of 22 senior boys from the local school, and one girl, a little mite whose clever acting well entitles her inclusion as the “ only female.” Mr J. Carmody is responsible for the coaching of these little actors, and it is safe to say that after what we saw of his efforts in the juvenile production “The Tipperary Schoolmaster” given in the Miners’ Hall last year, his latest effort will win the admiration of a packed audience. The rise of the curtain discloses the troupe as a nigger laundry working at the tubs singing awhile suitable plantation melodies. The Laundry idea is preserved throughout the entertainment and the various humorous sketches, plantation melodies and lullaby songs are all made to have some connection with it. The Poisoned Darkies cannot fail to keep the house in roars, whilst the sketch Boozey Samson, The Gobble-um Danpo and Lil Missey should all score on the merits. The whole performance will be found most entertaining while it possesses the advantage of being so unique and uncommon that it will appeal to everyone even apart from the good cause it is in aid of. The valuable aid of the Huntly Orchestra under the conductorship of Mr Bert Farrimond has also been secured who will accompany the entertainment throughout. A donation from the proceeds will be made to I,the Soldiers Waistcoat Fund. Messrs J. Carmody and Geo. Calder are the Joint Hon. Secretaries. The prices are popular, 1/- admitting adults to all parts, whilst children will be charged 6d. With such a good object in view the fund should benefit considerably.
