OVERSEER’S REPORT,

Overseer Stoop submitted the following report on general works during tlio past month: — NORTHERN RIDING. Boundary, Callaghans, Awatuna and Sandy s Hill have been patched and metalled. Surface metal to the extent of 230 yards, was run on the Loopline and Old Christchurch roads. A wooden culvert on the Old Christchurch road was repaired. Two wooden culverts on the Loopline road were replaced with Sinch and one 12inch concrete pipe culverts. Wooden culverts are being replaced, water tables cleaned and scrub cut back for a distance of two miles, on die Lamplough track from the Stafford end. Material for the extra span on the Arahura bridge was delivered on the site. Arahura Valley, Humphrey’s Gully, and Blue Spur roads were patchedmetalled, and scrub cut back on the Arahura Valley road. CENTRAL RIDING. Borough, Lake Arthur and Man's roads were patched-metalled to the extent of 80 yards. Twenty chains of Lake Arthur road extension were formed, with the bull-dozer and 12 chains were gravelled by the Council. Nine chains of drain were dug and a six ft. wooden culvert built on the road. A 12 inch pipe culvert was placed in the Municipal road above Spence’s One load of manuka scrub and 45 yards of gravel was used to fill in a- scour at the bridge- over Doughboy creek. Municipal, Lake Arthur, Max and Station roads were graded also. Obstructions at a bridge on the McOthur road were removed. Meharry’s O’Neil’s and the Styz roads were patched-metalled. Fifteen yards of stone were used for repairs to a scour at the foot of the apron on Moynihan’s protection work, Hokitika river. The roads, footpaths, etc., in Kanieri township have received the usual holiday attention. Drains on the Ritnu end of Adair’s road have been cleaned, and the road patched metalled. Pot holes were filled in on the South Spit end. The track from Rimu to Back creek road, is receiving the necessary attention. The Manama road was patched metalled to the extent of 20 yards. Approach rails and

hand rails on Fisherman’s and Mahinapua creeks bridges have been painted. The aerodrome has been mown, and gorse and tussocks grubbed out. Eight chains of the Milltown-Ara-liura road extension have been formed and gravelled, and a 22ft. bridge constructed. Repairs have been carried J out on Milltown and Dorothy Falls , roads Two 12 ft. swing gates have been erected at Mclntosh’s by-road, Ruatapu: SOUTHERN RIDING An old 17ft. bridge across Frenchman’s creek on the Totara road has been replaced and repairs to the road are to be carried out. Intensive repairs are being carried out on two bridges over Ellis creek on the Waitaha settlement road, and new drains are being dug, old draiiis cleaned out and concrete pipe culverts put in. Wanganui, La Fontaine, Haddock, Robertsons, ; and Petersons roads were patched metalled. Fergusons and Petersons roads were also graded with the horse grader. : Timber for Cron’s access road bridge j has been delivered on the site. Repairs were carried out to Wataroa Flat, Graham’s, Gunn and Richardson roads. An 18in. concrete pipe culvert was placed in Purcell’s doad. Five chains of the Wataroa Cemetary road were regravelled. Scrub lias been cut back, water tables cleaned, and damaged culverts and bridges are being replaced on the Three Mile Track, Okarito. Okarito Domain is being cleared of gorse. Arrangements have been made to replace a concrete pipe culvert on Docherty’s creek with a local timber bridge. i Repairs to the Oemoeroa Bluff track were carried out, and two chains of the track were gravelled. Three miles of the Waiho beach track were repaired. Scours on Gillespie’s road were filled in. An inspection was made of the danger of Loan Block Settlement by the inroads of the Waitangi river. The matter has been reported to the member for Westland. A visit was paid as far south as Bruce Bay and Mahitahi. Roadman Black will move next week to Biruce ( Bay and carry out several small jobs, j including the clearing and widening of the Settlement road. HIHWAYS REPORT Upper' Kokatahi Highway: —The total length of the road was graded in live days. The Leyland truck spread 84 .yards of gravel in. three days. The temporaly crossing at Duck Creek bridge No, 3, Mullhollancfs has been gravelled. The timber has been delivered. Roadside growth is being cut back along the roadway. ivajaieri-Koka£ahi Highway: —303 yards of river-bed were spread in eleven days; Leyland truck six days, International two days, and Bedford three days. The approaches at Duck Creek bridge and Longford were built up with 90 yards of gravel, delivered in three days, Bedford, two days and Leyland one day. The Power .grader (Operated over the total length of the road in five days. To prevent damage to the road surface in flood time, two 18-inch and one 8-inch pipe culjverts were put in. The bridges "are being painted. Lake Kanieri HighwayMcKay’s Creek bridge requires an overhaul. About 4,000 feet of timber is required. The estimated cost is £126 12s 6d. Kennedy’s bridge at the Forks L in a bad state of repair. About G,500 f-Set of timber is required. The estimated cost is £l9O. . Two miles of the Kanieri end of the Highway were graded, and rough places were patched with 21 yards of gravel. An inspection was made of the wooden bridges. 3,000 super feet is required. Repairs will cost £9O. Forks-Qkarrto Highway: —Repairs were attended to, and a quantity of gravel run out. Seabeaeh material is to be obtained as soon as circumstances permit. The road will receive special attention, prior to the holiday period when there is extra traffic on the road. Authority has been given for cleaning of side growth and widening as reasonably as possible.
