DRIVER’S DEATH
WHEN AT CONTROLS. A NARROW ESCAPE. (Australian Press Association). (Received this day at 9.5 a.m.) SYDNEY, December 9. A tram load of people, including many children, where proceeding to Balmoral beach on Sunday morning had a narrow escape, when the driver, unnoticed, collapsed and cued on his controls. The tram rapidly gathered speed, ran through the customary stopping places. When the conductor took in the situation, he rushed to the driver’s cabin, saw what had happened, applied the emergency brakes and brought the tram to a standstill.
