Zealand Refrigerating Co.’,' Ltd., advising that the following quantities of meat were delivered into the - Hokitika Abattoir Area during the month of August, 1940,, viz: 216 sheep.—Received.

From W. Connor,' Slaughterman, application to be- granted 12 working days annual leave from the 30th. September.—Received and granted; Manager to-make the necessary arrangements. , From H. M. Coulson, strongly protesting against the proposal to establish a petrol dump opposite liis property in porth Gibson Quay.—Received. ■/’. From Secretary,’ Westland Branch of Automobile-Association, advising that the Association does not contemplate any further action in regard to the turnouts on flic Hokitika bridge, at present-,' but .will take the matter up agiain when/world conditions improve.— Received./ From/ Director of National Service Department, Wellington, forwarding copy of, the' Emergency Reserve Corps Regulations, 1940, and intimating that a meeting will be convened in this area at an early date to arrange to- establish all local committees.—Received. FOREMAN’S REPORT. The Foreman (Mr F. Chesterman) reported the following works were carried out during the past month The cutting back of the entrance at the top of Cemetery Hill was completed in one and a-half days. Stafford Street levelling and gravelling between Tailored and SetVell Streets, a distance of five chains, occupied one week; also levelling and gravelling both sides of the Street. The widening and gravelling of Tailored Street, between Stafford and Hampden Streets, took two weeks to complete, the distance being abodt eight chains. The County grader was for one day cutting the side away about eight feet before gravelling. Wooden six-inch pipes were laid across the street leading into the main drain to take away the surface water, and another line laid across the intersection at Hampden Street to takp the water from Revell Street into Hampden Street drain, which usually went into Tailored Street, making it so wet. About 200 yards of gravel were used on this work.

Fitzherbert Street footpath and kerbing was chipped and cleaned out

between Stafford and Hampden Streets, the distance being ten chains. A down pipe was put in at the corner of Bcalcy arid Park Streets arid water channel graded, and three crossings were- piped with wooden pipes. Park Street drain on the north side between Hall and Britton Streets was cleaned out. Two 18-inch concrete pipes were put down in Jollie Street main drain at Mr G. Cederman’s.

The following was carried out on the water service:—A new service was put in to Mr H. Sticklers, in Bealey Street, and a new service to Mr R. Huxford’s, in , Revell Street, renewed services at the Drill Hall, in Camp Street, and at the Roman Catholic School, in Sewell Street., Repairs were carried out on tlie main, half-way rip the Cemetery Hill, and at Mr G. Rawlings’, Weld Street, and one and a-half days were spent on the Kanieri Luke road, repairing. Tlie average depth of water in the Reservoir for the month was 6ft. 9jin.—Received.

ABATTOIR REPORT. From Manager of Abattoirs, reporting there were slaughtered tlie following stock4o cows, 28 heifers, 47 bullocks, 199 sheep, 11 pigs, 1 calf. Fees for month £SB/17/6 (same period last year £77 /18 /0). — Received. It was resolved tha y t tenders be invited for labour only for painting work at the Abattoirs Manager’s cottage and Sexton’s cottage. FINANCE REPORT. The Finance Committee recommended accounts totalling £722/3/8 be ratified and passed for payment.—Received and adopted. The Treasurer reported receipts amounting to £2585/6/0, payments £395/3/7, debit balance £758/6/7 - Received.

The question- of renewing the lease of the Swimming Baths area was referred to the Mayor and Town Clerk to attend to. The Chairman referred to the extra work of the acting Town Clerk, and arrangements were made for assistance to be provided.

The Chairmen of Reserves and Public Works were authorised to make arrangements for necessary labour for work on Ca-ss Square and other reserves.

On the motion of Cr. Fox it was decided to draw the attention of the Railways Department to a number of broken wires on the overhead bridge.
