AEROPLANE FUND. (Per Press Association--Copyright). WELLINGTON, September 14. The Minister of Finance (the Hon. VV. Nash) announced that the Aeroplane Fund has reached £48,534 17s Id. The latest amounts acknowledged include £10,500 as a second contribution from the Southland Fighter Fund.

‘ CHARGE OF THEFT.

CHRISTCHfIJRCH, September 14., Three boys admitted stealing books valued at £2 9s when they appeared in the Children’s Court this morning, charged with theft. Two of. the hoys were brothers. Constable Quarterly said that the boys had been guilty of systematic thieving of books from different places. The two brothers had, the. police considered, been led by the third boy. One boy was placed under the supervision of the Child ’Welfare Officer for twelve months, and the two brothers were admonished and discharged.

RAILWAY OFFICERS AUCKLAND, September 15. ! Increases for the salaried officers of the Railway Department to meet the increased cost of living were announced at the" annual re-union of the Auckland Branch of the Railway Officers’ Institute on Saturday night. The Chairman, Mr J. IV. Shepherd, said he had received a telegram from the Dominion Secretary stating that an increase of £3 5s per annum had been authorised for officers under 18 years of age who wore employed near their homes. Those.in the sameclass living away from home would receive an increase of £6 10s. The officers over 18 years in receipt of a -salary up to £335, were to receive an additional £l3. An increase of £27 a year was to be granted to those with salaries of £335. All of the increases were to take effect p rom August 12.
