Amendments to- the Prisons’ liegu lutiouS contained in tonight’s Gazettti prescribe for the routine medical ex animation of every prisoner on reception.

They confirm the practice of prisoners being permitted, at the discretion of tlie controlling officers, to have their own shaving outats, and authorise prisoners to ..shave daily if they so desire, /isits are liberalised, and under the a nr regulations, / prisoners are to be permitted to write a letter a day nstoad of one per week as previously. Prisoners are also to be permitted to wear their own private clothes after working hours. The amending regulations also regularise certain improvements to the lations scale, which lias been in operation for some time past ,and in addition prescribe for the issuance of fresh fruit.

HONEY CONTROL

WELLINGTON, Sep. 12

The present personnel of members of the Honey Control Board, will act as members of the Board for the du- . ation of the war under the regulations Gazetted to-night. The Board was originally set up to control the. export of all honey from Nesv /ealatid, but this function has now been taken over by the Internal .Marketing Bivision, but the Board lias been retained in an advisory capacity ana is a valuable link between the producers and the Department. In the ordinary course ot cvints, each producer member of the Board tetires every two years, so that an election would be required cacti year to 1 eplace the retiring member. CLAIM AGAINST COUNCIL. WAIHI; Sep. 12. Whether Tive men who. have been employed by the Wailii Borough Council under Scheme No. 13 on building. stone walls, are entitled to be paid wages at the rates provided under the New Zealand StoneMasons’ Award, was the point Mi Freeman, S.M., was called upon to decide in the Wailii Magistrate’s Court, when proceedings were taken against the Council to recover more than £IOO, as the balance between the amounts paid to the men and L hat payable under the Stone Masons’ Award. COAL MINE TROUBLE

WELLINGTON, Sep. 12
