AUCKLAND, July 12.

“This seems to have been a premeditated attempt to evade the censor, and a deliberate case of attempting to send money out of the country after permission Was refused by the Reserve Bank,” said Detective- j Sergeant McHugh, in prosecuting I j Charles James freeman, who was charged on summons in the Pojico Court; with causing to be sent, otherwise than through the Post Office, a letter addressed to tlm manager of die National Bank of Australia in-' Sydney. May last, the Australian censor discovered among the mail which arrived in Sydney on a Mat sou ship from Auckland,, a letter containing enclosures, including £3OO in Australian currency and a cheque for £IOO, drawn, by Robinson’s Loan and .finance,' Limited, Auckland, on tlm Commercial Bank Australia, in favour of A. G. Baldwin. Robinsons*' Ltd. had an account at that Bank/ Also in the letter were, instructions for the National Bank of Australia to credit £4OO to Baldwin, at the Brisbane branch of the bank. “Freeman is the manager of Universal Direct tones, Auckland, added DetectiveSergeant McHugh, “and his principal 'is Baldwin,-; who left’-Auckland' for Australia on March 15. He. applied to the Reserve Bank to transfer funds to Australia, but was refused. Hbwever, he was granted permission to receive £4O per month ..for the, five months which he intended remaining in Australia. Before Jea-ving, .Baldwin handed defendant £4,000 in New Zealand currency, with instruction to’forward it in Australian currency through the'National Bank.

Remarking that the offence had been deliver aitely committed, Mr Moiling, S.M.,' imposed a fine of £lO, with costs 10s.
