Thomas Ashton Stevens, 73 years of ago. a resident of Waterton, was fatally burned when a fire destroyed his fwo roomed sod hut at Waterton at, ten o’clock last night. DRUNK IN CHARGE. ASHBURTON, July 15. Martin Jasepli Laffey, a labourer, of Westerfield, was fined £ls, for intoxication while in charge of a car on Saturday, and was delicensed for six months. FINED FOR ASSAULT. WELLINGTON, July 15. “This man distinguished himself while on H.M.S. “Exeter,” during the battle with the “Graf Spec,” but apart from that there was nothing in his favour at all.” said a naval officer when questioned at the Magistrate's Court, to-day. regarding Ashley Raymond Synott, a seaman who was charged with assaulting a young woman. Steve Gligmn, a miner, was lined £25 at the Magistrate’s Court, this morning, charged with being in a public street lor the purpose of hotting. Ho was described as a silver hotter. Two enemy aliens wore lined 30/oacli for failing to notify a change' of address. A SUICIDE. BLENHEIM July 15. James Henry Scott, 70, was found dead yesterday, sitting in an armchair in the dining room of his homo whore he lived alone. He was holding a gas tube near his face, and gas was turned full on. Scott, who was engaged" in the bakery and confectionery trade , at Blenheim for a period of 50 years, was last soon alive at midday on Saturday. The tragedy apparently occurred on Saturday night, as the electric light was still on when a neighbour, taking in a meal made the discovery of his death.
