The First Lord of the Admiralty, Mr Alexander, broadcasting to America. said: “Britain has never been threatened as she is now threatened, for centuries. Although, in the last extremity', we would tight from the Dominions, the time required lor victory will be much shorter if we continue to hold these islands. To defeat invasion and blockade, we possess fourteen capital ships; the Germans possess two or three; and the Italians six The French had nine, possession of which would have enabled the enemy to attack our convoys throughout the world, and would have emboldened him to challenge us around Britain to launch the weight of his mechanised forces against us, and even to threaten the security of American commerce and territory.”
