MONDAY, MAY 20. MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Hokitika Borough .Council was held at 8 p.m. Present: His Worship the Mayor (0. A. Perry, Esq., 0.8. E.), Cr. F. Freitas, J. Fox, ,>. L. Turner, W. H. Stopforth, G. Heinz, C. Saliari, D. P. Stuart, and H. T. Parry. An apology ior absence was received from Cr. Elcock. The minutes wdre confirmed and outward correspondence approved, IN WARD COItRESPON DENCE. From the N.Z. Refrigerating Co., advising that the following quantities of meat were delivered into the Hokitika abattoir area during the month of April, 1940, Viz: Six sheep, two lambs. —Received. From Ithe Secretary, Marine Department, Wellington ; regarding status , of a strip-of sandhills on the west side of Revel I Street, between Tudor Street and the north town licit, and stating that the matter had been investigated, and it would appear that it is a matter for this Council to deai with as the Marine Department is unable to locate anything which shows that that Department has any tit’e to the area in question.—Received; action to he taken to stop, the street and arrange for the necessary survey. From the Department of Health, suggesting that the Council take action in regard to the suppression ol of rats and mice, and asking to he informed in due course of the action taken. —Received. . 1 From Hon. See., Joint Council of the Order of St. John and N.Z. Red Cross' Society, appealing for financial assistance to the-sick and wounded fund. —Received; £2/2/- was voted. From . Commissioner of Transport, advising that in regard to the Hoki-tika-Nelson air service, that it her been found that the Hokitika-West-port section cannot lie operated wit!' the existing personnel and equipment, and stating that the wintei timetable (which eliminates Hokitika) will operate from May 6 —Received. From Hon. See., Hokitika Beautifying. Association, advising that the Association is putting in order the section (owned by the High School Board) which will give access to the Memorial Swimming Baths, and asking the Council to instal a surface drain' into the Weld Street drain in order to drain the section of surface water. —Received and approved. From District Superintendent, Dept, of Agriculture, advising that the piovisions of a suitable weighing machine at the abattoirs, where such a machine is at present, not installed should be undertaken and asking to be advised ol the present position.—Received. From Hokitika Aero Club advising that it is the intention of the Club to establish a local Kindergarten and subject to negotiations to open the school early next month. The proposal provides for the facility to he available free of charge to the public but this point will depend upon many factors and asking, whether Council supports tin movement and has any suggestions to offer.—Received and supported, with .10 suggestions to offer. From Westland County Council forwarding copy of resolution passed at meeting of representatives of the Hokitika Aerodrome suggesting that the government take over control of the Hokitika Aerodrome for the duration of the war and that as far as possible every consideration be given to the pioneer work of the Hokitika Aero Chib, in any future arrangements of the management of the ground.—Received ond approved. From Hokitika Businessmen’s Association— (1) Advising that their Association has had an offer of a supply of S or 10 wire rubbish baskets for main streets at cost price of 22/6 each and asking whether Council would he prepared to pay half cost if thov were procured.—Received and agreed to.

The Society will provide the necessary supervision and there will be no oxoenso for the Council.—Received and agreed to.
