In view of the call made by the Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser) for increased production by industry, the Auckland Manufacturers’ Association is to make representations urging the Government to permit 44 hours a week to be worked in industry, the additional four hours to be paid for at ordinary rates. This decision was made at a meeting of the general executive. ' The President (Mr Truseott) said it was not a political matter. It was a time of national crisis, and the Government had asked for greater production. The only way to get that was by working longer hours. It was suggested that this should be done at standard rates of pay

The shooting of a white heron, apparently by some vandal, was reported yesterday by the Curator of the Canterbury Museum (Dr. R. A. Falla). Expressing condemnation of the wanton shooting of the bird, Dr FeXa said that white herons, which were protected, were now fairly rare, thcii only nesting place in New Zealand 'being at Okarito, South Westland. In this case the heron had been found by a Rolleston resident a few days age and it had died by the time Mr P, J. O’Brien, from the Museum, had visited the place. An examination at the museum later showed that the bird, a young female, had been shot through a wing and thigh, and the position of the bullet wounds made it fairly clear that a sitting shot had been taken at the heron. It had apparently been able to fly some distance, but .had died from loss of blood and starvation. No one in these days, Dr. Fella added, had any excuse for not knowing a white heron when he saw one. That anypne could shoot one of the birds—a sitting shot at that—was to be deplored. WOODS’ GREAT PEPPERMINT CURE - . Conquers Coughs Colds, Influenza.
