How a young soldier risked his life in order to save a burning ammunition ship is told with the award of the 0.8. E. to Private Storey. In January, the “Royal Crown,” which was carrying ammunition, was attacked by a Nazi aeroplane and det on fire by a bomb, while another bomb hit the vessel, and failing tso explode, remained on hoard. The ship was beached and the,cr.ew escaped. Two efforts were,-..then made to get a party on board to extinguish the fire, but both failed. Private Storey volunteered and made a third attempt. He climbed up the, side of the ship by two ladders which -had been lashed together. After he had climbed 35 foot, the ladder broke and he saved himself by clutching a bl.qqk.on the davit falls.
