BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONDAY, APRIL 15. A meeting of the Council was held at 8 p.m. last evening. Present: The Mayor (G. A. Perry), Messrs G. Heinz, A. R. Elcock, J. Fox, 11. T. Parry, 1). F. E. Freitas, C. Caliari, J. L. Turner, W. H. A. Stopforth, and D. P. Stuart. , ; The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed.

The Treasurer’s report, showing a debit balance in the District Fund Account of £403/3/1 was received. Accounts paid, amounting to £864/7/4, were ratified. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE.

From the New Zealand Refrigerating Co., Ltd., advising that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika abattoir area during the month of March, 1940, viz.: 19 sheep, 8 lambs. —Received.

From the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand, Christchurch, soliciting a small contribution towards the work carried out by the Society and expressing appreciation of financial assistance given by the Council in the past.—Received, and £l/1/- voted. From the Postmaster, Hokitika, conveying appreciation from the Children’s Health Camp Committee for donation. —Received.

yA From the Department of Labour, Wellington, furnishing particulars under which men will be available for employment by local bodies under Scheme No. 13. —Received. From Mr P. W. Shannon, Sewell Street, asking for two loads of gravel to be spread on the footpath in front of his residence.—Received and granted. From Mr IV. F. Keen, corner Sewell and Tudor Streets, asking that growth be cut down at the side of his residence and also asking that a very bad hole o-n the side of the road be filled. —Received and authorised.

From Mr J. A. Roberts, Fitzherbert Street, drawing attention, to the state of the north belt drain and asking that it be cleaned out and also that the culvert leading to the dump, across the drain, be elnarged to allow flood water to escape quickly.—-Received; Foreman to report. - From Mrs S. Bennett, Sale Street, stating that the side, of the road at her frontage is soft and asking for some filling in order that she can make a lawn along the frontage.—Received; Foreman to report.

From Mr George Noble, notifying that his property in Revoll Street has been sold, that the petrol pump has been removed and that the renewal of the Dangerous Goods License for the current year is not required.—Received.

From the ~ Municipal Association, enclosing copies of Wellington City Bylaw made under, the provisions of the Meat Act. 1939, which has now been approved by the/Ministef of Agriculture, and stating that the copies are forwarded as a model in connection with any abattoir by-laws which the Council may desire to prepare under the aforesaid att. —Received and consideration deferred. From Miss H. Keller, Hall Stf-eet, asking for a few loads of filling at the frontage of her property in order that a lawn can be made.—Received and approved. From J. V. Conning, assistant, abattoirs, application for an increase of salary.—Received and'salary increased to £3/16/- a week. From Hokitika Businessmen’s Association. offering co-operation in closing business premises at noon on the loth., for the parade of the West Coast members of the 2nd. Echelon, N.Z.E.F. — Received with thanks. FOREMAN’S REPORT.

The Foreman reported on works carried out during the past month, as follows:—

We finished levelling and grading Jollie Street footpaths at the State houses, ready for gravelling, the 4in. water main was laid, six chains of 4in. Everite pipes being used, and the necessary water connections put in. A week was spent on the water main between' the reservoir and the Kaniert Forks, the siding slipped away at the blue leutting above Stribling creek, carrying away the line, and destroying some of the pipes, those had to be replaced with new ones; two pipes were also put in the main at Constitution Flat and the reservoir cleaned out, and various leaks repaired. Mr Croop carried out the following maintenance work about town: —

On Gibson Quay the vvatertablos were cleaned out and the sides of the road levelled. In Wold Street, east of the railway, the sides of the street were graded and the tables cleaned and the spoil carted away. Coyle’s lorry was engaged’ gravelling a part of Racecourse road, off Hampden Street, and carting gravel on to Livingstone Street, north of Stafford Street, and extending Hall Street footpath and Davie Street footpath at the Borough stables. Three chains in Sale Street was graded, between Stafford and Hampden Streets ami spoil carted away, and side ofDavic Street at Ford’s Brewery and water channel cleaned out. The footpath in Sale Street between Weld Street and the Quay, on the east side was chipped and cleaned, and a wooden pipe put across the footpath at the intersection of Roileston Street and Gibson Quay. A new water service was put in to the Gasworks, with l\in. galvanised pipes, and a new service at Mr Wallace’s, in Hall Street. Services wore repaired at Mr O’Brien’s, in Fitzherbert Street. Mr Gutliberlet’s, Gibson Quay. Mrs Nesbitt’s. Boale.v Street, and Mrs Ellis’. Sewell Street, and Mr Harrison’s. Hampden Street. The cycle track was repaired with asphalt and cleaned for sports meeting, and pot holes repaired with asphalt in Be veil Street. Hamilton Street, Weld Street, and Tailored Street-.
