BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening at 9 o’clock. Present: Mr G. A. Perry (Mayor), Crs. Freitas, Fox, - Turner, Stuart, Calidri ) and Heinz. Apologies were made for Crs. Elcock, Stopforth, and Parry. : The minutes were confirmed and correspondence outward approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From N-Z. Standards Institute, submitting for comment draft N.Z. Standard specification for road grader cutting edges anu tynes, No. D, 1294. —Received. From Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Wellington, advising that a list of historic trees in New Zealand is being compiled, a,nd asking for any information respecting historic native trees, as well as trees planted by pioneers, or those having some special point of interest. —Received.

From Canterbury Employers’ Association, advising that the S.T.L.B. (Urban Section) Award was clearly intended to cover labourers, but that on a. technical omission the Labour Department had ruled that the Award does not apply except where the employment is under some of the special schedules provided in the Award. The agreement by the Local Body Assessors in the Conciliation Council was that labourers (other than those under the special , schedules) should be covered, by th e Award, and it is proposed that the consent of the local bodies to follow this, course and have the Award amended later to rectify the technical omission be obtained: —Received and agreed to. The Union has asked for a Disputes Committee under this Award to be established, and it is suggested that Mr J, F. Mcnzies, Town Clerk of Sumner Borough Council, and the Secretary of the Canterbury, Employers,’ Association, act as the local bodies’ represen- > tatives on the Disputes Committee.—• Received. From Secretary, Hokitika Harbour Board, stating that in regard to the flood \ danger through the deposits of gravel across the river entrance that the Harbour Board had approached the Member for Westland for a copy or loan of the plan of the proposed"'work to remove the blockage at the mouth of the Hokitika river.—Received. From the N.Z. Refrigerating Co. Ltd., advising that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika during the month of August, 1939: 113 sheep, 9 pigs.—Received. From Medical Officer of Health, Christchurch, advising that in reply tci the Council’s enquiry whether the water from the Council’s well-bore was likely to have any affect on hot water systems, that’ the samples of water had been submitted to the Government analyst, who reported that the amount of iron in the Borough well water was very small and would not be a source of trouble.—Received. From Addisons, Hokitika, application for permission to replace the existing verandah at shop in Hamilton Street with a verandah of the suspended type.—Received, From the Claude Neon Lights, Christchurch, application for permission (1) To erect a Neon light sign at the Dunedin Hotel; (2) at the premises of Bryant’s shoe store.—Received and approved, subject to Bft. clearance. From Secretary, Hokitika Fite Brigade, advising that there are lio indicators to mark the position of fire plugs in Park and Jodie Streets, and also at Mr D. P. Stuart’s in Stafford Street, find suggesting that where the roads are tar-sealed, that a white circle should be puiiited around the fire plugs in order that they may bo easily located.—Received; to be attended to. From Westland County Council, application to instal a septic tank at new County Office, part M.R. 735, Hamilton Street.—Received and approved. From Mrs M. A. Ridland, drawing attention to the unsatisfactory con- |

dition of Wold Street along the frontage of her property and stating that in wet weather that it is not possible to bring a motor-car alongside the footpath.—-Received. From A. J. Marshall, Gibson Quay (next to the Customs building), stating that the surface water was overflowing from the footpath on to his section, and asking to have the matter remedied.—Received. From Hon. Sec.. Hokitika Beautifying- Association, asking tlie Council to discourage the erection of cottages in north Revel 1 Street, on the beach side, as it is felt that the erection of such buildings in this area if allowed to continue, will certainly not be for the improvement of the sea froiit. The Association would also like to draw attention to the drain at the conifer of Stafford and Brittan Streets and Hampden and Davie Streets, and suggest that improvements be effected.— Received, no action taken. Cr. Heinz stated the buildings being erected were quite decent, and lie did not think any exception should be taken to them.. Iro-m the Public Library, asking that a door be installed in the Public Library at the top of the steps leading to the basement. —Received. From E. V. Hughes, stating that the road in front of his house in Bealey Street is very bad in wet"weather, end asking that action be taken to allow the surface water to escape, and also that some gravel be provided.—Received ; referred to P.W. Committee. From M. E. Spiers, application for permission to instal a septic tank at premises in Weld Street.—Received; agreed to. TREASURER’S REPORT. The Treasurer reported receipts for period were £937/4/7, payment.?

From Manager of Abattoirs, reporting for month of August there were slaughtered 32 cows, 41 heifers, 05 bullocks, 800 sheep, 17 pigs, 7 calves. ■ Condemned : 2 cows, 1 sheep. Fees for period £77/18/- (for August, 1988, £69/6/0) .—Received. FOREMAN’S REPORT. The Foreman reported the following works were carried out during the month of August:— One chain of nine-inch concrete pipes was laid across Tancred Street, at the intersection of Weld Street a ml the sixinch earthenware pipes were removed, being unsuited to take away the surface water in heavy .vea-her in frout ol the Regent Tlieaue, the time taking three days. t hree and a-half chains of drain were excavated and six-inch wooden pipes were put in Stafford Street along the Roman Catholic Church on the north side of the street to take away flood water from the Club grounds and drainage from the Church. The work .occupied six days. Three days were spent on the North ■Boundary drain, deepening and cleaning out, and the growth taken out between Spencer Street and the Boundary drain; time taken was three days. Healey Street footpath was cleaned and gravelled on the east side between Hampden and Stafford Streets, and a part on the west side between Hampden and Park Streets. Brittan Street footpath was cleaned on botli sides, between Hampden and Stafford Streets and the west side gravelled. Hampden Street footpath on the south side between Sale and Brittan Streets was also cleaned and gravelled, this taking five days. Five earthenware pipes were put in Brittan Street drain at the intersection of Hampden Street, and six 18inch concrete pipes were put in across Hoffman Street, leading into Air McRae’s residence. Water services were renewed at Mr Laurensen’s in Bealey Street and three repaired at Mr Scliroedcr’s and Mr Raine’s, in Revell Street, and Mr F. Andrews’ in Livingstone Street, and two days were spent repairing on the Lake line. The average depth of water in the reservoir for the month was nine feet, nine inches. —Received. , The Traffic Inspector reported of duly and August as satisfactory.—Received. The Sanitary Inspector’s report for August was received. He reported drainage in Livingstone Street south
