The Council met at.B p.m. Present: Mr G. A. Petty (Mayor); Crs.' C. Caliari, J. L. Turner, W. A. Stopforth, J. Fox, A. R. Elcock, D. P. Stuart ) arid G. Heinz! An apology was made for the absence of Cr. Freitas.

From Department of internal Af.fairs, acknowledging notification* that Messrs Albert Richard Elcock and William Charles Braddon had been elected as this Council’s representatives on the Hokitika Fire Board for the ensuing term. —Received. From Hokitika Brethren Assembly, asking for the use of the Town Hall on Sunday afternoons and evenings, „.apd intimating .that there will be no charge of collection, and further asking .under what .conditions the Council would allow them use of 100 volt electric. heater for heating-the room;—Received and request granted, subject to terms.

From W .C. Handisides, builder, application for permission to erect a suspended verandah at Mr. W. H. Nieol’s new shop in Weld Street. Also .asking permission to erect a scaffolding for the said building on the footpath.—Received and approved.

From Clerk, Westland LicensingCommittee, advising that the Department’ of- Justice had recently revised the matter of salaries of Clerks of the Licensing Committee in order to fix' such salaries on a more equitable basis,- tluV quantem of salary in each ease;- being based upon the number of licenses and the amount of revenue derived there from by the .local authorities, and regarding the Westland Licensing District the amount of £SO a year is considered 'to be a reasonable amount of salary. Fowler, Junr., asking for the completion of the road at the corner of Park and Jollie Streets, as the* tradesmen make use of the footpath, and also the incomplete, state of : the road is; keeping a considerable amount of water on his section as the drain is overgrown.-—Received; AVorks Committee to report. , .Freni E. Straight, asking for a further three loads of gravel in front of his house in Livingstone Street, and if this is granted h e will undertake to spread the gravel.—Received and approved .

From E. Straight, Livingstone Street, asking that a street light be erected near his dwelling in Livingstone Street.—Received and declined.

From Public AVorks Engineer, Hokitika, asking for permission to raise the level of the footpath of the Customs House in Gibson’s Quay approximately 2ft, with a width of 12ft. to provide the entrance for the public works lorries and other vehicles. —Received and request granted, subject to approval of Chairman of AA r orks. From J. A. Monk, application for permission to instal a septic tank atpart Section 3327/8, Sewell Street, to connect with the Sewell Street drain. —Received and approved. From Hokitika Beautifying- Association, strongly recommending the ifiomoval of the picket fence around .Macan drew Square.—Received and approved.

for use, and that- the Company would be prepared to. do tlie switching on and off without cost to the Council, provided they were given one hour’s notice or alternatively, it could be arranged for one of the Borough staff to do the switching when necessary. From Hokitika Businessmen’s Association: (1) Drawing the Council’s attention to the urgent need of stricter supervision te the activities of hawkers in the Borough, and suggesting that the by-law’s he considerably amended to.jdeal with this serious nuisance, and if possible, the appointment cf a person with, authority to, enforce the bylaw.—Deceived. It was resolved to make a demand for payment on a number of firms.

(2) The Association further desires to fernind the Council of the over-increasing, necessity for the numbering' of houses in tlie Borough, and would appreciate an assurance of early consideration of the matter. —Further deferred.

From H. W. G. Park as agent for S. J. Preston, stating that at present, a . building is being erected, at the rear of Section 225, adjoining the right-of-way leading to the beach, off Weld Street. That if the building is allowed to proceed it will reduce the width of the right-of-way, and increase the fire risk to Mr Preston’s premises; that Mi* Preston most strongly objects to any building built, on the right-off-way, and requests the Council te prohibit th e erection of such building.— Received; referred to committee of Crs. Elcock, Turner and Stuart to report.

r rom Hon. Sec., Westland Provincial Council (N.Z. Centennial), advising that in regard to Centennial Scholarship Fund, that tlie payments were originally to be spread over ten years, hut iri order to ensure the Government subsidy, it is asked that if possible that the balance (in tlie case of this Council £24) be paid as soon as convenient.—Received and approved:

From C. E. S'parkes, Sanitary Contractor, offering for a new Sanitary Contract on e year from August 1, 1939, for a payment of 2/- per sanitary pan per calendar month. —Received; left to Mayor to confer and report.

• From A. Mackenzie,.Glentui, asking for particulars of Sanitary Contract if tenders are called.—Received.

From Westland Hospital Board,.advising that their, estimates' had not'yet been finally approved; but that it is expected that the Council’s proportion of the levy will amount to £2299/17/4, payable in nine instalments, the first being due on May 31 last, and asking that pending approval of th e estimates, that a progress payment be now made of £255/11/4. —Received and approved. From Medical Officer of Health, Christchurch, forwarding Government Analyst’s report on samples of water taken from the' Borough water supply. The water from the lake is higher in organic matter than when last examined. The water from the pump is of satisfactory quality.—Received. From National Peace Council, inviting co-operation in inviting a conference of all Powers for peace.l—Received.

From Mrs It. Butler, asking for access to section in Hoffmann Street, off the quay.—Received; referred to Public Works Committee to report. From C. Caliqri,, asking for a crossing to new building.—Received and granted on usual terms. .The question of', piping the drain was referred to the .Public Works Committee to report;

REPORTS. The Treasurer reported receipts £9Bl/7/6, ,payments £443/10/3, debit balance £IB6B/4/3.—Received. Accounts amounting to £IOB2/11/8, and ‘£6o endowment reserve account were ratified. It Was resolved that the license for a pie cart at Truman’s corner be transferred from W. Johnstone to James Thompson at £3 per year, with right to renewal for one year.

FOREMAN’S REPORT. The foreman reported on the following . works carried out during the month Foiyi,da..ys were spent in tar sealing, carrying’ us up to between Rolleston and Davie Streets in Hampden Street, 52 chains finishing the tar from the gasworks and four days finishing Livingstone Street, gravelling into Mr Straight’s residence, also four days were spent in clearing and gravelling the extension of Brittan Street north of Park Street, three and a-half chains being done, and four concrete pipes put in the drain on north side of Park Street. ’ Two gravelled roadways were put in to the new school, on e in Park Street and one in Sale Street. -A gra'velled crossing was put in to Mr Gale’s in Sale Street between Weld 4 - Street and Gibson Quay, and a crossing in Park Street at Mr Green’s gravelled. A large break took place in Fitzherbert Street between Stafford and Weld Streets, evidently an old wooden drain leading to the. Railway yard under Fitzherbert Street, taking several loads of sand to fill up. New water services were put in at the following new residences: Mr' M. • Houston, Revell Street; Mr Zampese, Revell Street; Mr Monks, Sewell Street; Mr Caliari, Hampden Street; Mr Scliroeder, Revell Street; and the water ser-

vices renewed at Miss Keller’s in Hall Street. A concrete crossing was put in at Mr F. Freitas’ in Revell Street, and the culvert on the north boundary road repaired. About five' chains cf wire was put on the fence oa the soatheta beaadhrjr of

the cemetery and a new gate erected to keep cattle from getting in, and the pipe drain cleared half way up t.Ae hill, and Spencer Street' repaired at tliebottom of-the hill, having being scoured out by flood water from, the hill.

The fence and gate at the reservoir was repaired, also the track leading from the road was cleared and repaired.

Traffic signs were erected along Revell Street, about sixteen being put up. Nine 2ft. 3in. concrete pipes were put in Livingstone Street drain, the wooden part of the drain being rotten. The average depth of water in the reservoir for the month was 9ft. 4in. ABATTOIR REPORT. -

From manager of abattoirs, reporting during May there were slaughter-, ed-:—26 cows, 17 heifers, 90 bullocks, 393 sheep, 109 lambs and pigs, 6 calves. Condemned: 1 bullock. Fees tor month £B9/2-/0 (same month last'vear £B7/13/6). —Received. The sub-committee Reported in favour of reserves at rear of Stafford Street, held by E. Stoop being disposed of; but that another reserve, held-by R. Ford be not dealt with*. —Received and adopted.
