CORRESPONDENCE

A BOROUGH NECESSITY. • (To the Editor). Sir, —Kindly allow me space, in your paper to add the following grievance. In a recent issue of your paper I read, that the civic fathers of Hokitika (the capital of Westland), had favoured the erection of memorial gates at Cass Square ; and improvements to the swimming baths, as a fitting Centenary Memorial. Very suitable of course, but what this town nerds more than anything else, is a public destructor, and a garbage collector. On a recent Sunday afternoon, I took a walk along the beach. and it was anything but enjoyable I assure you. The first offensive matter l noticed, was offal, presumably from the butchers ; a little further on a stack of oyster shells, and a variety of decaying fruit and vegetables, all smelling atrociously and covered with flies. One cannot blame the business people altogether, if they are not provided with facilities for the disposing of this matter. The attraction this must be to tourists visiting the town, I leave to vour imagination. I am etc., DISGUSTED RESIDENT.
