GOING “DRY”
PROH IBIT lON FOR BOMBAY. BOMBAY. April 27. Bombay city and suburbs are to go completely “dry” from August 1. The Ahmedabad experimental “dry area” is to he extended and converted into a total prohibition area, liquor permits being confined to Europeans only. “On the whole the experiment of total prohibition in Bardoli and the live villages of the Mandvi district may be definitely said to be successful and the .Government has under consideration its extension to Yalod Mahal,” states the first official report reviewing the progress of total prohibition since its introduction six mouths ago in Bardoli taluka and five villages of the Surat district of the Bombay Presidency. “While before the introduction of prohibition, the consumption of country spirit in the area under report for the same period in the previous year was 3254 gallons, there was not a single gallon consumed during the same period after the introduction of total prohibition. The sale of country spirit at shops on the border of the area, before the introduction of the scheme was 2032 gallons, and after introduction it was 1617 gallons. Figures of other intoxicants show the same result.”
