HOKITIKA MEETING

.Mrs J. Preston presided over a fair 1 attendance of members at the Women’s Institute May meeting last night in

the Soldiers’ Hall. There Avere several questions to. bo discussed. Final arrangements avo re made for the forthcoming Drama Festival Avhich is being held in the Princess Theatre, on May 30th. Mesdames Frederic, Davenport, Lynch, Benjamin and Parkhill volunteered to act as doorkeepers. Mesdames Lynch, Benjamin and Mitchell promised to preside over the supper to

be held after the performance. Mention was made of the choir Avhich some of the musical members are forming. Tt Avas announced tliat the next meeting of the Drama Circle will be on May Bth. at Mrs Bassett’s residence.

The President asked members to patronise the sales table Avhich it is hoped to make a feature of this year’s meetings.

It Avas unanimously resolved to send a letter to the Hospital Board, protesting against the proposed situation of the now Maternity Home, suggesting that it should ho built in' the residential part of the toAvn, not up on the hill, next the Old Men’s V 'Home as is at present intended. During the evening, Mr H. M. Coulson addressed members for over an hour, recounting in his Avitty, amusing ; style, highlights of his voyage on tjio “Orion” on its Coronation trip from Sydney to England. He particularly Impressed bis bearers Avith his descriptions of Buddhist fire-walkers in Colombo, the ancient city of Aden, Cairo and a violent eruption of Stronrboli. A philosophical note Avas added Avhen Mr Coulson spoke of the broadening influence of travel and the spirit of tolerance which is horn of a close-hand knowledge and greater understanding of other nations. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Coulson at the conclusion. Supper was served by Mesdames Bassett. .1. Breeze, Benjamin, Johnston, and Appleton.
